The kinetics of para-ortho conversion and nuclear spin relaxation of H 2 in chloroform- d 1 were investigated in the presence of nitroxides as paramagnetic catalysts. The back conversion from para-hydrogen ( p-H 2) to ortho-hydrogen ( o-H 2) was followed by NMR by recording the increase in the intensity of the signal of o-H 2 at regular intervals of time. The nitroxides proved to be hundreds of...

Over the years many techniques have been devised for the measurement of tissue oxygenation (oximetry). Oximetry using polarographic needle electrodes has long been considered a gold standard. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) based oximetry uses exogenously administered reporter molecules such as perfluorocarbons to quantitatively interrogate oxygen tension (pO2). This technique has been success...

The elimination of extrinsic sources of spin relaxation is key to realizing the exceptional intrinsic spin transport performance of graphene. Toward this, we study charge and spin transport in bilayer graphene-based spin valve devices fabricated in a new device architecture that allows us to make a comparative study by separately investigating the roles of the substrate and polymer residues on ...

Quantum tunneling of the magnetization in a single-molecule magnet has been studied in experiments that combine microwave spectroscopy (10–50 GHz) with low temperature high sensitivity micro-Hall effect magnetometry (T = 0.4 K). This method enables the monitoring of spin-state populations in the presence of microwave radiation and a direct measure of the energy splitting between low lying high-...

We report 133 Cs nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the 2D frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs 2 CuCl 4 down to 2 K and up to 15 T. We show that 133 Cs NMR is a good probe of the magnetic degrees of freedom in this material. Cu spin degrees of freedom are sensed through a strong anisotropic hyperfine coupling. The spin excitation gap opens above the critical saturation field....

Progressive saturation EPR measurements and EPR linewidth determinations have been performed on spin-labeled lipids in fluid phospholipid bilayer membranes to elucidate the mechanisms of relaxation enhancement by different paramagnetic ion salts. Such paramagnetic relaxation agents are widely used for structural EPR studies in biological systems, particularly with membranes. Metal ions of the 3...

Pulsed electron spin resonance (ESR) dipolar spectroscopy (PDS) in combination with site-directed spin labeling is unique in providing nanometer-range distances and distributions in biological systems. To date, most of the pulsed ESR techniques require frozen solutions at cryogenic temperatures to reduce the rapid electron spin relaxation rate and to prevent averaging of electron-electron dipol...

We describe a Cs atomic magnetometer operating in the spin-exchange-relaxation-free SERF regime. With a vapor cell temperature of 103 °C we achieve intrinsic magnetic resonance widths B=17 G corresponding to an electron spin-relaxation rate of 300 s−1 when the spin-exchange rate is SE=14 000 s −1. We also observe an interesting narrowing effect due to diffusion. Signal-to-noise measurements yie...

We discuss collective spin-wave excitations in triplet superconductors with an easy axis anisotropy for the order parameter. Using a microscopic model for interacting electrons, we estimate the frequency of such excitations in Bechgaard salts and ruthenate superconductors to be 1 and 20 GHz, respectively. We introduce an effective bosonic model to describe spin-wave excitations and calculate th...

Introduction: The main pathologic feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) [1]. There is increasing evidence that iron-mediated oxidative stress via the Fenton reaction is responsible for this loss of neurons [2]. Iron's paramagnetism leads to changes in the relaxation rates R1, R2 and R2* [3] and the phase of susceptibi...
