We show that quantum and thermal fluctuations in spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates lift the accidental degeneracy of the mean-field phase diagram. Fluctuations select the uniaxial (square biaxial) nematic state for scattering lengths a4>a2 (a4<a2). Paradoxically, the order is stronger at higher temperatures. For spin-2 87Rb and 23Na, a continuous Ising-type transition is predicted on raising the...

Ground-state properties of the two-dimensional S = 1/2 random Heisenberg models are investigated by the exact-diagonalization method. The phase diagram of the bondrandom model (the ±J model) is the same as that of the corresponding Ising spin glass model, in spite of quantum fluctuation. In the site-random model, the spin glass phase exists at least in the ferro-rich case. In comparison with th...

We study the spin fluctuation dynamics of Cu-O chains in the oxygen deficient planes of YBa2Cu3O6+x. The chains are described by a model including antiferromagnetic interactions between the spins and Kondo-like scattering of the oxygen holes by the copper spins. There are incommensurate spin fluctuations along the direction of the chains. The dynamic structure factor of this system is qualitati...

Fluctuations on de Sitter solution of Einstein-Cartan field equations are obtained in terms of the matter density primordial density fluctuations and spin-torsion density and matter density fluctuations obtained from COBE data. Einstein-de Sitter solution is shown to be unstable even in the absence of torsion. The spin-torsion density fluctuation is simply computed from the Einstein-Cartan equat...

PURPOSE Cerebral arteriolar vasomotor function plays an important role in brain health. Since respiratory changes in the partial arterial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2) cause arterioles to vasodilate or vasoconstrict, resting-state arteriolar vasomotion results in the fluctuation of venous blood oxygenation, which can be monitored by observing magnetic resonance (MR) signals. Focusing on the superior ...

We present the study of a magnetic quantum phase transition in the itinerant-electron ferromagnet Ni3Al at high pressures. Electrical resistivity measurements in a diamond anvil cell at hydrostatic pressures up to 100 kbar and temperatures as low as 50 mK indicate that the Curie temperature collapses towards absolute zero at a critical pressure pc close to 80 kbar. Over wide ranges in pressure ...

Inspired by the cuprate stripes, we consider the problem of a one-dimensional metal living on a delocalized trajectory in two dimensional space: the metallic lattice string. A model is constructed with maximal coupling between longitudinal and transversal charge motions, which nevertheless renormalizes into a minimal generalization of the Luttinger liquid: an independent set of string modes has...

Using the operational framework of completely positive, trace preserving operations and thermodynamic fluctuation relations, we derive a lower bound for the heat exchange in a Landauer erasure process on a quantum system. Our bound comes from a nonphenomenological derivation of the Landauer principle which holds for generic nonequilibrium dynamics. Furthermore, the bound depends on the nonunita...

The spin-excitation continuum, expected to dominate the low-energy fluctuation spectrum in the Haldane spin chain around the Brillouin zone center, q = 0, is directly observed by inelastic magnetic neutron scattering in the S = 1 quasi-1D antiferromagnet CsNiCl3. We find that the single mode approximation fails, and that a finite energy width appears in the dynamic correlation function S(q,omeg...

We probe the local quasiparticles density of states in micron-sized SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x) single crystals by means of scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. Spectral features resemble those of cuprates, particularly a dip-hump-like structure developed at energies larger than the gap that can be ascribed to the coupling of quasiparticles to a collective mode, quite likely a resonant spin mode. The energy ...
