Soil vapour extraction (SVE), is the primary method used in the world to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from unsaturated subsurface porous media. The objective of this work is to study the change of the soil air relative permeability during continuous venting and removal of contaminant from a polluted soil. Once the flow starts, the contaminants will volatilize and the volume of liqui...

Environmental pollution consists of different types of pollutants in air, soil, and water. Due to the fact that plants can respond to environmental pollution, they can be used as bio-indicators for environmental monitoring. Air pollution in areas with oil and gas refineries nearby is an important problem. This study aims to survey the effects of gas refinery air pollutants on Conocarpus erectus...

The external gamma irradiation resulting from radionuclides deposited on the ground surface can be an important source of radiation exposure. The assessment of this irradiation is extremely complex due to the large number of environmental factors which affect the gamma photon flux in air originating from the ground. The source energy affects the interaction between the radiation and the medium,...

Nitrogen oxides (NO x = NO + NO2) are a primary component of air pollution-a leading cause of premature death in humans and biodiversity declines worldwide. Although regulatory policies in California have successfully limited transportation sources of NO x pollution, several of the United States' worst-air quality districts remain in rural regions of the state. Site-based findings suggest that ...

A numerical simulation is carried out to study the effect of the thin metal outer case of an antitank mine and the top air gap of an antipersonnel mine on the passive infrared imaging signature. In addition, an antipersonnel surface mine is also analyzed in the present investigation to show its effect on the soil thermal content. The effect of shortand long-wavelength radiation as well as the c...

Stem CO(2) concentrations (stem [CO(2)]) undergo large temporal variations that need to be understood to better link tree physiological processes to biosphere-atmosphere CO(2) exchange. During 19 months, stem [CO(2)] was continuously measured in mature subalpine Norway spruce trees (Picea abies) and jointly analysed with stem, soil and air temperatures, sap flow rates, stem radius changes and C...

Batch sorption experiments were carried out with the bacteriophages MS2 and phi X174. Two types of reactor vessels, polypropylene and glass, were used. Consistently lower concentrations of MS2 were found in the liquid phase in the absence of soil (control blanks) than in the presence of soil after mixing. High levels of MS2 inactivation (approximately 99.9%) were observed in control tubes made ...

Two efficient, semi-automatic elutriators for assaying soil samples for nematodes are described. The first apparatus is a four-unit elutriator which combines conventional extraction methods with the following major features: automatic mixing of 500- to 1,500-cm(3) soil samples with water (+/- air); "turbinate" sample splitters from which fractions of 1/15 or greater are passed onto 26- or 38-mi...

Acclimation of a sandy soil to an air-natural gas mixture stimulated the biological oxidation of chloroform to carbon dioxide. Acetylene and methane inhibited chloroform oxidation. Chloroform oxidation continued up to 31 days in the absence of methane. Chloroform oxidation rates increased at chloroform concentrations up to 5 mug g of soil.
