This is another in a series of invited tutorial, status and survey papers that are being regularly solicited by the PTGIT Committee on Special Papers. We invited Profess01 Fano to commit to paprr his elegant but, unelaborate explanation of the principles of sequential decoding, a scheme which is currently contending for a position as the most practical implementation to dale of Shannon’s theory...

This study presents a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic based clinical trial simulation framework for evaluating the performance of a fixed-sample Bayesian design (BD) and two alternative Bayesian sequential designs (BSDs) (i.e., a non-hierarchical (NON-H) and a semi-hierarchical (SEMI-H) one). Prior information was elicited from adult trials and weighted based on the expected similarity of respo...

Decision makers are often unable to choose between the options that they are offered. In these settings they typically defer their decision, that is, delay the decision to a later point in time or avoid the decision altogether. In this paper, we outline eight behavioral findings regarding the causes and consequences of choice deferral that cognitive theories of decision making should be able to...

Background and purpose: Problems in oral feeding are common in infants, especially in preterm infants. Therefore, assessment of infants feeding could be of great help in making appropriate diagnosis for rehabilitation of swallowing. Therefore, comprehensive and accurate assessment tools are needed. The aim of this study was to review assessment tools used for infants oral feeding. Materials an...

Introduction: The importance of breast-feeding is well-known over the first two-year of the life. Although, the complementary feeding is the main source of energy during the above-mentioned period and breast-feeding itself cannot supply the child nutritional requirements, as a consequence, complementary feeding provides seventy percent of the daily child requirements. It seems that a decrease i...

In the above paper,1 an asymptotically tight upper bound on the th moment ( 0) of the minimal number of guesses required to determine the value of a random variable was derived. We show that we can tighten this bound for the case of positive integer moments (when = 1, the bound is improved by a factor of 2) and that the new bound also applies to a class of nonminimal guessing sequences.

In this paper we present the results of a method for decoding start codes and overhead information in an MPEG-4 bitstream using sequential decoding with soft channel values. We show that performance of sequential decoding is superior to that of hard decisions alone and can be further improved if probabilities of occurrence of the start codes are taken into consideration.
