conclusions the addition of 2.5-3 mcg sufentanil to 15 mg 0.05% bupivacaine maintained the patient’s hemodynamic stability similar to fentanyl. intrathecal sufentanil added to bupivacaine, when compared with fentanyl, may lead to prolonged duration of analgesia, facilitate the spread of the sensory block, increase mean spo2 levels, and reduce overall side effects. background the addition of intr...

Background and Objective: Stroke results in increased sensory disorder, motor impairment and functional deficit. Sensory stimulation is the basis for beginning of the process of brain plasticity and recovery of sensory motor function in the affected limbs. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of sensory retraining on functional recovery of upper limbs in patients with ische...

BACKGROUND Clonidine used as an adjuvant to ropivacaine have been shown to prolong the duration of peripheral nerve blocks. The mechanism of action remains unclear. We hypothesized, that clonidine used as an adjuvant to ropivacaine extends the duration of an adductor canal block (ACB) by a peripheral mechanism, compared to ropivacaine alone when controlling for systemic effects. METHODS We co...

BACKGROUND Several factors are thought to affect the spread and duration of spinal anesthesia (SA) in adults. These include the volume of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the lumbar spinal canal, which has a negative correlation with both the spread and duration of the sensory block. OBJECTIVES We evaluated whether CSF aspiration before an injection of levobupivacaine affected the spread or durat...

PURPOSE To provide a review of local anesthetic (LA) agents and adjuncts, opioids and muscle relaxants, and their intraoperative effects and postoperative outcomes in intravenous regional anesthesia (IVRA). SOURCE A search for prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled trials evaluating LA agents, opioids and muscle relaxants as adjuvants for IVRA, was conducted (MEDLINE(®), Embase). In...

The ultrastructural differentiation and central projection of identified bristle mechanosensory neurons were examined in Drosophila mutants lacking action potentials. Two mutations, parats1 and napts, are known to block axonal conduction in centrally located neurons at high temperatures. Their effects on epithelial sensory cells, which are derived from imaginal disks during pupation, have not b...

BACKGROUND A decreased lumbosacral subarachnoidal space volume is a major factor in the cephalad intrathecal spread of local anesthetics in term parturients and their subarachnoidal space is decreased due to the compressive effect of huge uteri. Therefore, they show a higher level of sensory block and hypotensive episodes. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the symphysis-fundal...

A patient had a prolonged block after continuous extradural analgesia in labour. The block was unilateral, but 60 min after a second block there was bilateral sensory and motor loss. The original unblocked side did not recover fully until more than 60 hr. The local anaesthetic agent was 18 ml of bupivacine 0.5% plain.

BACKGROUND The extended analgesic efficacy of intrathecal dexmedetomidine (ITD) has been investigated in a few clinical trials; however, there is a lack of conclusive evidence upon its ideal dosage. OBJECTIVES To elucidate the dose-response relationship between ITD and subarachnoid block characteristics, particularly the duration of analgesia and differential analgesia (DA: defined as time di...
