By the transient generation of a reactive anhydride intermediate, this redox-neutral approach offers a mild and rapid entry to high-value heterocyclic compounds without the need of UV irradiation, high temperature, high CO pressure, tin reagents, or peroxides.

Titanium chelate addition of aryl nucleophiles to cyclopropyl aldehyde 6 followed by a tin-catalyzed one-pot retro-aldol, acetalisation and lactonisation sequence afforded cis and trans γ-aryllactone acetals. A γ-furyllactone derived by this approach was further transformed in two steps to model compounds for the oxidised northeastern sectors of selected Pseudopterogorgia diterpenoids.

A facile synthesis of potential acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, the tacrine analogues 3a-p, has been accomplished by direct cyclocondensation of 1-aryl-4-cyano-5-aminopyrazole with β-ketoesters using tin(IV) chloride as catalyst.
