PURPOSE Clones established from a human scleral cDNA library were systematically sequenced. Public database sequence comparisons were performed to generate a profile of genes expressed in the human sclera and identify candidate genes for inherited diseases with scleral involvement. METHODS A directionally cloned pCMV-PCR cDNA library was constructed from RNA isolated from scleras of human don...

AIMS To study binocular function in patients with longstanding asymmetric keratoconus. METHODS In 20 adult patients with longstanding asymmetric keratoconus managed with a scleral contact lens a full clinical and orthoptic assessment was performed with and without the scleral contact lens in the poorer eye. RESULTS All 20 patients had a corrected acuity of at least 6/9 in their better eye. ...

PURPOSE To compare the surgical outcomes of the two different methods used for Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV) implantation between the donor scleral graft method and the partial-thickness scleral flap method. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 28 eyes of 26 patients diagnosed as neovascular glaucoma followed by AGV implantation. Based on the surgical method, the included eyes ...

PURPOSE To describe a novel technique for toric intraocular lens (IOL) repositioning and fixation in the absence of adequate capsular support. METHODS Case report and literature review. RESULTS Two cases are presented with scleral fixation of a one-piece toric IOL (SN6AT series; Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX). In both cases, toric IOLs initially placed within the capsular bag bec...

BACKGROUND Rhinosporidiosis is a rare chronic infection of the mucous membranes caused by the Rhinosporidium seeberi. Approximately 15% of cases of rhinosporidiosis are ocular, occurring mainly in the tarsal conjunctiva. There are only 11 cases of scleral melt with staphyloma formation associated with bulbar conjuctival oculosporidiosis and none of them was associated with partial regression of...

PURPOSE Previous work has suggested a major role of scleral biomechanics in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Since fiber orientation in connective tissues is a key determinant of tissue biomechanics, experimental characterization of scleral fiber orientation is needed to fully understand scleral biomechanics. This is a report of baseline experimental measurements of fiber orientation in whole norm...

Treatment of chemical bums requires rapid dilution of the chemical, decreasing eye exposure to the toxic material. Prolonged exposure to the chemicals can lead to decreased visual acuity, and even loss of the eye (Pfister, 1983). ffighly caustic compounds can be found in industry and agriculture, as well as at home (Duane, 1981). Alkalies are usually more damaging than acids, due to rapid penet...

INTRODUCTION Primary ectatic corneal diseases usually require rigid gas-permeable (RGP) corneal contact lens wear for visual rehabilitation. As the disease progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to fit these lenses. RGP scleral contact lenses now provide another treatment option before resorting to surgery. CLINICAL PICTURE Two patients with pellucid marginal degeneration and one with ...

A deep anterior chamber of the globe is a clinical sign of posterior scleral rupture, an ophthalmologic emergency. On axial CT, the depth of the anterior chambers of ruptured globes was greater than the depth of the anterior chambers of normal globes. The discrepancy between the depth of the two anterior chambers in any patient can also suggest posterior scleral rupture.
