We present the results of K-band imaging polarimetry of seven 3CR radio galaxies with 0.7 < z < 1.2. We find strong evidence for polarization in three sources: 3C 22, 3C 41 and 3C 114. Of these, 3C 41 shows strong evidence of having a quasar core whose infrared light is scattered by dust. We also find some evidence for polarization in 3C 54 and in 3C 356. The two pointlike sources (3C 22 and 3C...

Fundamental optics such as lenses and prisms work by applying phase shifts of several radians to incoming light, and rapid control of such phase shifts is crucial to telecommunications. However, large, controllable optical phase shifts have remained elusive for isolated quantum systems. We have used a single trapped atomic ion to induce and measure a large optical phase shift of 1.3±0.1 radians...

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was justifiably excited when he noticed that when a monochromatic light beam is passed through a simple transparent liquid, different colors can be detected in the scattered light. Raman called this frequency-shifted scattered light ‘a new type of secondary radiation’, because he realized that the phenomenon he discovered was caused by a molecular property diffe...

Light that is scattered from lenses and mirrors in an optical system produces a halo of stray light around bright objects within the field of view. The angular distribution of scattered light from any one component is usually described by the Harvey model. This paper presents analytic expressions for the scattered irradiance at a focal plane from optical components that scatter light in accorda...

A computer programwas developed to calculate the light scattered from an assembly of alpha particle tracks in a PADC film. The tracks were randomly seeded on the film to simulate the irradiation by alpha particles emitted by the naturally occurring radon gas and its short-lived progeny. The ray-tracing method was applied to simulate light propagation through the tracks. The angular distribution...

An optical method has been proposed and its system has been developed for measuring the change in diameter during the production of polyester filament in a manufacturing plant. The principle of the method is based on the application of scattered light on the filament. The sensor head of the system consisted of a semiconductor laser, two silicon-photodiodes as a light receiver, and a cylindrical...

Due to its time-reversal nature, optical phase conjugation generates a monochromatic light wave which retraces its propagation paths. Here, we demonstrate the regeneration of a subwavelength optical focus by phase conjugation. Monochromatic light from a subwavelength source is scattered by random nanoparticles, and the scattered light is phase conjugated at the far-field region by coupling its ...

Rendering the interaction between light and microscopic particles in a scene, such as smoke or floating dust, has traditionally been a computationally intensive and difficult process. To produce an accurate rendering requires simulation, or reasonably accurate approximation, of how the light interacts with these particles on a fine level of detail. Specifically, when light enters an area of som...

We have studied the Brillouin spectrum of light scattered by the dilute monatomic one component gases xenon and helium and by the xenon-helium binary gas mixture. In a one component monatomic gas the scattered light spectrum for a scattering process with momentum transfer, K, and energy transfer, w, is proportional to the power spectrum, S(K, W), of fluctuations in the density of the gas. In a ...
