Factors and techniques leading to the more rapid isolation of salmonellae from faeces that are negative by direct plating were examined. The aim was to increase the number of specimens on which positive reports might be given within 24 hours of receipt. Salmonellae were isolated from 279 of the specimens studied. Brilliant green MacConkey agar was found to be the most satisfactory solid selecti...

The virulence plasmids of Salmonella typhimurium and other invasive Salmonella serovars have long been associated with the ability of these bacteria to cause systemic infection beyond the intestines in orally inoculated animals. Genetic analysis of virulence genes on the high-molecular-weight plasmids has revealed that no more than five genes spanning a 6.2-kb region are sufficient to replace t...

Miraglia, Gennaro J. (Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and L. Joe Berry. Enhancement of salmonellosis and emergence of secondary infection in mice exposed to cold. J. Bacteriol. 84:1173-1180. 1962.-The ld(50) dose for mice of Salmonella typhimurium, strain RIA, is 4.1 x 10(5) for animals individually housed without bedding and maintained at 25 C. It is 3.8 x 10(3) for animals similarly housed...

A monoclonal antibody (MAb), MO15, was raised against the lipopolysaccharide antigen of an epsilon15-lysogenized serogroup E(1) Salmonella strain. The O factor 15-specific MAb MO15, together with another serogroup E-specific MAb, can differentiate among phage lysogenization variants in serogroup E salmonellae. Their epitope specificities in relation to conventional O-antigenic structures are di...

We report a typhoid-like illness with fever and altered consciousness in a 22-year-old man with growth of Salmonella enterica serovar Virchow in blood and stool culture. Bacteremia and invasive disease due to non-typhoid salmonellae (NTS) are known in severely immunocompromised patients, but so far have not been described in immunocompetent adults.

Forty-nine cell envelope proteins of Salmonella typhimurium SL1344 have been identified by microsequencing and assigned to a two-dimensional reference map. Ten of the sequenced proteins appear to be novel. Several others closely match currently hypothetical proteins or proteins found in other bacteria but not previously reported in salmonellae.

A method for early isolation and detection of salmonellae in sewage and other wastewaters by using the rapid lysine decarboxylase test as a single biochemical reaction for screening the suspected Salmonella colonies is described. By this method, Salmonella isolation and identification can be completed within 2 to 3 days in contrast to the 5 to 7 days required for the conventional method.

Comparative results obtained in isolating salmonellae from faeces by the use of tetrathionate broth, MS, and MM enrichment medium are given. The best results were obtained by tetrathionate broth prepared from infusion broth. The MS as well as the MM medium increased the total number of positive results.

In Taiwan, despite a substantial decline of Salmonella enterica serotype Choleraesuis infections, strains resistant to ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone persist. A self-transferable bla(CMY-2)-harboring IncI1 plasmid was identified in S. enterica serotypes Choleraesuis, Typhimurium, Agona, and Enteritidis and contributed to the overall increase of ceftriaxone resistance in salmonellae.

It is well known that the availability of water has a pronounced influence on the heat resistance of microorganisms. The resistance of completely dry organisms is many times higher than the resistance of the same organisms in a dilute suspension which has a water activity close to 1.0. There is, however, very little information about the resistance of vegatative bacterial cells at the intermedi...
