We present here two patients that had an aberrant right subclavian artery and an anomalous origin of the right vertebral artery from the right common carotid artery. We review the previous literature and discuss herein the embryologic mechanism and clinical implications of this variation.
BACKGROUND Atherosclerotic stenosis of the brachiocephalic artery sometimes occurs in patients with coronary artery disease, and can cause stroke during the perioperative period of coronary artery bypass grafting. CASE PRESENTATION We describe the case of a 77-year old male with severe stenosis of the brachiocephalic artery and severe coronary artery disease. He successfully underwent aorto-r...
Kommerell's diverticulum (KD) is defined as a bulbous dilatation of the origin of an aberrant subclavian artery due to a remnant of the left fourth aortic arch. We report the case of an asymptomatic woman in whom progressive thrombosis of the KD extending to the prevertebral tract of an aberrant right subclavian artery was detected at multidetector computed tomography imaging for lung cancer st...
A 36-year old woman presented with a 5-year history of progressive dysphagia. The barium swallow of the oesophagus revealed an oblique extrinsic defect consistent with an aberrant right subclavian artery. A computed tomography angiogram confirmed the diagnosis. Surgical correction is indicated for dysphagia lusoria in association with an aberrant right subclavian artery. The patient underwent s...
A 3-month-old male infant, with diagnosis of a complex, cyanotic, congenital heart disease (double-outlet right ventricle, pulmonary stenosis, and hypoplastic pulmonary arteries, among other defects) and a double aortic arch (Fig. 1, [L, left; LCA, left carotid artery; LSA, left subclavian artery; R, right; RCA, right carotid artery; RSA, right subclavian artery]), had required a shunt from asc...
Mycotic pseudoaneurysm of the subclavian artery is uncommon and its therapeutic strategy has not been established. We report a case of 81-year-old woman with mycotic pseudoaneurysm in the right subclavian artery. Blood culture showed Enterobacter cloacae. Because of hemoptysis and acute expansion of the pseudoaneurysm, emergent coil embolization was performed, but failed. The patient underwent ...
Chest pain is a common complaint in young children and adolescents. Among the various causes of chest pain, subclavian artery aneurysm is seldom reported in pediatric group. Intrathoracic subclavian artery aneurysm is closely related to atherosclerosis in adults but usually secondary to trauma in children. Surgical intervention or endovascular therapy is required since the aneurysms are at an i...
INTRODUCTION True subclavian artery aneurysms are relatively rare lesions. Thoracic outlet compression is responsible for 75% of aneurysms. They are formed as a result of compression by, for example a cervical rib. CASE PRESENTATION We present a case of subclavian artery aneurysm secondary to a cervical rib in a 25-year-old young Asian adult, who presented with an acutely ischaemic upper limb...
DESCRIPTION A premature newborn weighing 1.9 kg, presenting with cyanosis, feeding and respiratory difficulties was admitted to our centre for further evaluation. An initial echocardiogram suggested a pulmonary atresia with a malalignment infundibular ventricle septum defect with atypical right-sided ductus arteriosus (2.4 mm) arising from the aberrant right subclavian artery (4 mm), which was ...
was introduced into brachiocephalic angioplasty. This report is based on 299 performed angioplasty procedures. This number is divided as follows: innominate artery 7 (2 with stents), left subclavian artery 49 (15 with stents), right subclavian artery 18 (5 with stents), left common carotid artery 12 (6 with stents), right common carotid artery 5 (3 with stents), external carotid artery 21 (1 wi...
