OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the inter-rater reliability of ultrasound imaging for assessing trunk muscle morphologic characteristics at rest and while contracted among different pairs of novice raters. The secondary purpose was to compare 3 different measurement techniques for assessing lateral abdominal muscle thickness. METHODS A single-group repeated measures relia...

[Purpose] This study assessed the activity of the abdominal muscles according to the angle of the knee joints during sit-to-stand. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty healthy adult males participated in this study. Subjects initiated sit-to-stand at knee joint angles of 60°, 90°, or 120°. An electromyography system was used to measure the maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the rectus abdomini...

Previous studies investigated the effects of load carriage on electromyographic (EMG) response of three selected trunk muscles of children aged between nine and ten during treadmill walking. (Hong and Cheung, 2002). In this study, similar experimental setup was used to investigate the muscle activities during prolonged load carrying walking on younger children aged six. One more muscle, the rec...

DESCRIPTION A 56-year-old woman with previous breast cancer underwent a muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap to her left breast. She developed marked flap swelling postoperatively and episodes of pyrexia. A breast wound swab grew Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii. This strain of Acinetobacter was multidrug resistant, including resistance to meropenem.

Objective:  back pain is one of the most common health problems in different societies of the world, especially in industrialized countries. The aim of this study was to compare the electromyography activity of abdominal muscles and hamstrings in women with low back pain in different lifting positions. Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental and laboratory study. The statistical sam...

Penile metastases are rare in colorectal cancer. We report the first case of such a recurrence in a patient who had undergone an extralevator abdominoperineal resection with vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap perineal reconstruction. The patient was treated with curative intent by total penectomy.

BACKGROUND Prior imaging studies of torso muscle moment arms for use as inputs into biomechanical models have been derived from subjects lying supine. Recent research suggests moment arms of the rectus abdominis are larger when standing versus lying supine. METHODS Axial MRI images, through and parallel to the intervertebral discs were obtained from five females in a standing upright neutral ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Performing nontraditional abdominal exercises with devices such as abdominal straps, the Power Wheel, and the Ab Revolutionizer has been suggested as a way to activate abdominal and extraneous (nonabdominal) musculature as effectively as more traditional abdominal exercises, such as the crunch and bent-knee sit-up. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness o...

The Obliquus abdominis externus profundus was found to be present in eleven cases among 50 sides examined in Japanese adult cadavers (frequency of occurrence 22%). This muscle originated at a level ranging from the fifth to seventh rib either by a single slip from one of these ribs (nine cases) or by two slips from two ribs (two cases), and ran medialwards almost horizontally to insert into the...

Myotome portion of the somites give rise to most of the skeletal muscles of the body. Muscles of the extremities develop from somatic mesoderm. Splanchnic mesoderm gives rise to cardiac muscle and most of the smooth muscles; whereas mesoderm of the pharyngeal arches gives rise to some of the head and neck muscles. The sternalis muscle is a derivative of superficial part of the rectus abdominis ...
