We grew SrTiO(3) on SrTiO(3)(001) by pulsed laser deposition, while observing x-ray diffraction at the (00(1/2)) position. The drop DeltaI in the x-ray intensity following a laser pulse contains information about plume-surface interactions. Kinematic theory predicts DeltaI/I = -4sigma(1 - sigma), so that DeltaI /I depends only on the amount of deposited material sigma. In contrast, we observed ...

We show a new resonance acceleration scheme for generating ultradense relativistic electron bunches in helical motions and hence emitting brilliant vortical γ-ray pulses in the quantum electrodynamic (QED) regime of circularly-polarized (CP) laser-plasma interactions. Here the combined effects of the radiation reaction recoil force and the self-generated magnetic fields result in not only trapp...

The X-ray Pump-Probe instrument achieves femtosecond time-resolution with hard X-ray methods using a free-electron laser source. It covers a photon energy range of 4-24 keV. A femtosecond optical laser system is available across a broad spectrum of wavelengths for generating transient states of matter. The instrument is designed to emphasize versatility and the scientific goals encompass ultraf...

The article sums up contemporary experiments and results in the field of a femtosecond laser pulse waveguiding in capillary discharge plasma. The main principles are described and the most important examples of the works on the waveguiding and hybridly pumped soft x-ray lasers are mentioned. In general the future steps for creation of a new apparatus for hybridly pumped soft x-ray laser at FNSP...

In this paper, we propose a scheme to generate tunable coherent X-ray radiation for future light source applications. This scheme uses an energy chirped electron beam, a laser modulator, a laser chirper and two bunch compressors to generate a prebunched kilo-Ampere current electron beam from a few tens Ampere electron beam out of a linac. The initial modulation energy wavelength can be compress...

Energetic ions and ultrashort X-rays were generated by an intense ultrashort laser interacting with a copper target. Fast ions up to 3 MeV were observed with CR-39 nuclear track detector sheets when 7 TW laser was used. Cu ∼ Cu ions with the energy from 50 keV to 220 keV were detected with a Thomson parabola detector in the case of the laser power of 2.5 TW. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction was ...

The evolution of dense aluminum and carbon plasmas produced by laser irradiation of 500-microm -diam semicylindrical targets was studied using soft x-ray laser interferometry. Plasmas created heating the cavity walls with 120-ps -duration optical laser pulses of approximately 1x10;{12}Wcm;{-2} peak intensity were observed to expand and converge on axis to form a localized high-density plasma re...

Collisionally pumped x-ray lasers are ideal for a wide variety of plasma diagnostics. They have been demonstrated over a wavelength range extending from 3.5 nm to 40 nm and have output energies as high as 10 mJ in 150 ps pulses. The beam divergence is less than 15 mrad and the linewidth λ/∆λ~10 provides sufficient longitudinal coherence for interferometry. Using various arrangements constructed...

A laser-driven electron-storage ring can produce nearly monochromatic, tunable X-rays in the keV energy regime by inverse Compton scattering. The small footprint, relative low cost and excellent beam quality provide the prospect for valuable preclinical use in radiography and tomography. The monochromaticity of the beam prevents beam hardening effects that are a serious problem in quantitative ...

Laser pulses in current ultra-short TW systems are far from being ideal Gaussian beams. The influence of the presence of non-Gaussian features of the laser pulse is investigated here from experiments and 3D Particle-in-Cell simulations. Both the experimental intensity distribution and wavefront are used as input in the simulations. It is shown that a quantitative agreement between experimental ...
