The main idea of this paper is to determine the influence of the position and the angle of a tag in the reading of an RFID system, therefore we have developed two different experiments. In the first one, a model with a tag was moved perpendicular to two antennas fixed to a vertical support. In the second one, the same model was moved through two vertical supports with two RFID-UHF antennas each...
A novel design concept of a compact printable orientation independent chipless RFID tag is presented. The tag consists of a circular patch loaded with multiple slot ring resonators. This symmetric frequency domain based tag has the advantage to be read from any orientation with the reader antennas. The tag can be read in close proximity by chipless RFID tag reader with waveguide(s) and also can...
For automatic monitoring systems and user oriented services, crowd density estimation becomes an important research topic. There are existing methods like the camera based crowd density estimation or the RFID based counting systems. However, these methods need deployment cost and enough spaces to set the sensors. In this paper, we therefore present a passive estimation system that could be easi...
The great majority of commercial UHF RFID tags are based on dipole antennas, and it is well-known that the tag performance degrades significantly when placed near a conducting surface. The question we address in this paper is: is it necessarily so? In this paper, we present evidence that suggest that it is not, at least to the degree that it has been observed. We present two antennas: one that ...
Running efficiency is an important factor to consider in order to avoid injury. In particular, foot pronation, the angle of the foot as it hits the ground, is a common cause for many types of injuries amoung runners. Though pronation is common, diagnosing pronation is difficult and imprecise. Currently there is no method of diagonsis which can quantify the severity of pronation. In this paper w...
Secure physical environments are vulnerable to misuse by authorized users. To protect against potentially suspicious actions, data about the movement of users can be captured through the use of RFID tags and sensors, and patterns of suspicious behaviour detected in the captured data. This paper presents four types of suspicious patterns, algorithms for their detection, and the design and implem...
The chapter addresses the problem by presenting an analytical model for a 3-dimensional single folded loop antenna with detection coverage in space. Based on the antenna theory, the inductance and impedance of the loop antenna is investigated. Design issues including antenna topology, read range, tag orientations, proximity of metal and other antennas are addressed to determine proper antenna f...
in this work, a design of quadrifilar helical antenna with characteristics of compact, wideband and circular polarization is presented. It is achieved by combining the ways of tuning the different dimensions of the pairs of bifilars, and a feeding structure for providing the self-phasing technique. Both of simulated and measured results are reported in this study.

This paper examines genetic algorithm optimizers in antenna design. Specifically, we evaluate whether GA optimizers are appropriate design techniques for RFID broadband antenna design by looking at current research with GA antennas and deducing whether similar optimizers can be applied to RFID broadband antennas such as bowtie designs.
