A phosphoniafluorene and a spirobiphosphoniafluorene bearing 4-(diethylamino)styryl groups were synthesized. These compounds exhibited bathochromically shifted absorption and emission, compared with their silicon analogues, because of the strong acceptor property of the phosphonium core. They also showed enhanced two-photon absorptions at around 930 nm.

A camphor based chiral phosphonium hydrido borate zwitterion was synthesised and successfully applied in the enantioselective hydrogenation of imines with selectivities up to 76% ee. The high stability of the novel chiral FLP-system enables effective recycling of the metal-free catalyst.

The radical-mediated addition of triphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate to olefins (hydrophosphonation) is reported. Both standard radical initiators and photochemical conditions are effective, up to the gram scale. The phosphonium salts are shown to serve as Z-selective Wittig olefination reagents, even without purification.

The swelling and exfoliation behavior of protonated layered oxides using an organo-phosphonium base, tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPOH), was examined for the first time. The action of the aqueous solution induced massive interlayer expansion up to ~100-fold. The swollen crystals were immediately broken and completely exfoliated into unilamellar nanosheets in 1-2 h by shaking.
