We investigate the evolution of an electron undergoing coherent tunneling via adiabatic passage CTAP using the solution of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation in both space and time for a triple well potential. We find the eigenspectrum and complete time evolution for a range of different pulsing schemes. This also provides an example of a system that can be described with the tools from b...

The simplest model in quantum optics deals with a single two-level atom interacting with a single mode of the radiation field. This ideal situation is implemented in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics experiments, using high quality microwave or optical cavities as photon boxes. It provides a test bench for fundamental quantum processes and a promising ground for quantum information processing.

In this paper, we formulate and solve a guaranteed cost control problem for a class of uncertain linear stochastic quantum systems. For these quantum systems, a connection with an associated classical (non-quantum) system is first established. Using this connection, the desired guaranteed cost results are established. The theory presented is illustrated using an example from quantum optics.

We present a constructive method to translate small quantum circuits into their optical analogues, using linear components of present-day quantum optics technology only. These optical circuits perform precisely the computation that the quantum circuits are designed for, and can thus be used to test the performance of quantum algorithms. The method relies on the representation of several quantum...

uantum computers are expected to be able to solve mathematical problems that cannot be solved using conventional computers. Many of these problems are of practical importance, especially in the areas of cryptography and secure communications. APL is developing an optical approach to quantum computing in which the bits, or “qubits,” are represented by single photons. Our approach allows the use ...

A possibility of the two-photon excitation of an isomeric state in a nucleus of thorium-229 has been discussed. The fluorescence intensity of the excitation is demonstrated to be identical for the irradiation of nuclei with either monochromatic light or polychromatic radiation consisting of a sequence of short light pulses of the same intensity. The two-photon excitation of Th3+ ion in an elect...

he quantum theory of light predicts many interesting effects that may seem counterintuitive or even impossible from a classical point of view. Several effects of this kind have been investigated at the Applied Physics Laboratory, including a new kind of interferometry, the cancellation of dispersion between two distant media, and a new type of phase associated with the electromagnetic field. So...

The relations between quantum coherence and quantum interference are discussed. A general method for generation of quantum coherence through interference-induced state selection is introduced and then applied to ‘simple’ atomic systems under two-photon transitions, with applications in quantum optics and laser cooling.

This roadmap bundles fast developing topics in experimental optical quantum sciences, addressing current challenges as well as potential advances in future research. We have focused on three main areas: quantum assisted high precision measurements, quantum information/simulation, and quantum gases. Quantum assisted high precision measurements are discussed in the first three sections, which rev...
