This paper provides an overview of the details of the data assimilation system implementation, at both pre and post-processing levels, which are, more often than not, mentioned in passing in data assimilation talks or articles. Data assimilation is the art of combining model and observations. It relies on a set of equations grounded on sound statistics. Some theoretical studies investigate ways...

Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) are widely used for personal identification due to uniqueness of fingerprints. Minutiaebased fingerprint matching techniques are normally used for fingerprint matching. Fingerprint matching results and their accuracy depends on presence of valid minutiae. In this paper, we present a new technique for fingerprint image post-processing. This pos...

Multi-view three-dimensional television relies on view synthesis to reduce the number of views being transmitted. Arbitrary views can be synthesized by utilizing corresponding depth images with textures. The depth images obtained from stereo pairs or range cameras may contain erroneous values, which entail artifacts in a rendered view. Post-processing of the data may then be utilized to enhance...

Kinesthesia is our sense of limb motion, and allows us to gauge the speed, direction, and amplitude of our movements. Over half of stroke survivors have significant impairments in kinesthesia, which leads to greatly reduced recovery and function in everyday activities. Despite the high reported incidence of kinesthetic deficits after stroke, very little is known about how damage beyond just pri...

A novel constrained texture synthesis approach is proposed to enhance the visual quality of a degraded image by reconstructing its high frequency texture content. In low-bit-rate image and video compression and communication systems, high frequency transformed coefficients are often lost due to aggressive quantization or un-even error protection schemes. However, with the block-based encoding a...

Phenotypic variation facilitates adaptations to novel environments. Silk is an example of a highly variable biomaterial. The two-spidroin (MaSp) model suggests that spider major ampullate (MA) silk is composed of two proteins-MaSp1 predominately contains alanine and glycine and forms strength enhancing β-sheet crystals, while MaSp2 contains proline and forms elastic spirals. Nonetheless, mechan...

We report here on our experiments with POST (Part of Speech Tagger) to address problems of ambiguity and of understanding unknown words. Part of speech tagging, per se, is a well understood problem. Our paper reports experiments in three important areas: handling unknown words, l imit ing the size of the training set, and returning a set of the most likely tags for each word rather than a singl...

This supplementary file presents new methods to analyze PC-MR velocity data using the principles of control volume analysis. PC-MR phase and magnitude images were imported into MATLAB for image processing. Spatiotemporal velocity values were derived from the phase images as follows. A static background region was manually selected to determine the phase value corresponding to zero velocity, com...

This paper describes an experiment in which we try to automatically correct mistakes in grammatical agreement in English to Czech MT outputs. We perform several rule-based corrections on sentences parsed to dependency trees. We prove that it is possible to improve the MT quality of majority of the systems participating in WMT shared task. We made both automatic (BLEU) and manual evaluations.

The spread of video surveillance systems and video phones means that video cameras are more ubiquitous than ever before. In the event of a catastrophe the video captured by these cameras is an important source of information for those directing the response. This information is currently either ignored because it is seen as inaccessible, filtered through the media, or requires a huge commitment...
