expected to cause respiratory system infections, including lung abscess [9, 10]. This makes moxifloxacin a highly effective drug for bacterial eradication, and its efficacy has been demonstrated in several clinical trails in patients with community acquired respiratory system infections [9, 10]. Additional advantage of moxifloxacin is once daily administration, which translates to better patien...

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) cause human infections that characteristically involve indwelling medical devices with an infection course that is usually indolent. In contrast, Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a species of CoNS that can cause infection of either a device or native tissue with an aggressive clinical course more reflective of infection due to Staphylococcus aureus (4, 5). In a significant proportion of cases of community acquired diarrhoea no recognised pathogen is detected. Verocytotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) are associated with haemorrhagic colitis and the haemolytic uraemic syndrome but their role in community acquired diarrhoea is not fully understood. BACKGROUND Early laboratory detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is crucial for controlling tuberculosis. We developed a hydrogel mycobacterial culture method that retains the advantages of both solid and liquid methods in terms of speed, cost, and efficiency. METHODS Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) suspensions and 200 acid-fast bacilli (AFB)-positive clinical specimens ...

We report on a PCR-based assay we have developed for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum samples. One hundred sputum specimens, which included 34 culture-positive and 66 culture-negative specimens, were evaluated with this system. Of the 34 culture-positive specimens, 31 were PCR positive, and 60 of the culture-negative specimens were PCR negative. An internal standard has bee...
