In this study, different objective quality measures for the performance prediction of noise reduction schemes are compared to subjective data from psychoacoustic listening tests. It is shown that the considered perceptual measures are appropriate to define a quality test-bench which can be used for the development and optimization of noise reduction schemes.

A standing question in the field of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and User Modeling in general is what is the appropriate level of model granularity (how many skills to model) and how is that granularity derived? In this paper we will explore varying levels of skill generality within 8 grade mathematics using models containing 1, 5, 39 and 106 skills. We will measure the accuracy of these models...

The ASCENS project works with systems of self-aware, selfadaptive and self-expressive ensembles. Performance awareness represents a concern that cuts across multiple aspects of such systems, from the techniques to acquire performance information by monitoring, to the methods of incorporating such information into the design making and decision making processes. This chapter provides an overview...

A two-part study of the influence of vehicle headlamps and roadway lighting on the ability of drivers to see pedestrians along crosswalks in roundabout intersections was conducted. In the first part of the study, the photometric performance of vehicle headlamp systems including conventional halogen and high intensity discharge (HID) low-beam headlamp systems and intelligent vehicle headlamp sys...

As Cloud computing has gained much popularity recently, many organizations consider transmitting their large-scale computing-intensive programs to cloud. However, cloud service market is still in its infant stage. Many companies offer a variety of cloud computing services with different pricing schemes, while customers have the demand of "spending the least, gaining the most". It makes a challe...

The current paradigm in student modeling, Knowledge Tracing, has continued to show the power of its simplifying assumption of knowledge as a binary and monotonically increasing construct, the value of which directly causes the outcome of student answers to questions. Recent efforts have focused on optimizing the prediction accuracy of responses to questions using student models. Incorporating i...

The spectrum of approaches to performance prediction of parallel systems ranges from low-cost, lowprecision compile-time methods to high-cost, highprecision methods with an equal variety of underlying modeling formalisms (e.g., task graphs, queueing networks, simulation languages) which are mutually incompatible. A performance prediction technique is described which uni es a number of existing ...

Application performance is critical in high-performance computing (HPC), however, it is not considered in a systematic way in the HPC software development process. Integrated performance models could improve this situation. Advanced analytic performance modeling and performance analysis tools exist in isolation but have similar goals and could benefit mutually. We find that existing analysis to...

Performance characterization is a fundamental issue in wireless networks for real time routing, wireless network simulation, and etc. There are four basic wireless operations that are required to be modeled, i.e., unicast, anycast, broadcast, and multicast. As observed in many recent works, the temporal and spatial distribution of packet receptions can have significant impact on wireless perfor...

The Internet is increasingly being called upon to provide different levels of service to different applications and users. A practical problem in doing so is that although Ethernet is one of the hops for nearly all communication in the Internet, it does not provide any QoS guarantees. A natural question, therefore, is the effect of offered load on Ethernet throughput and delay. In this paper, w...
