Continuous studies on the use of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon as the central block of an organic photosensitizer have brought forth a new opportunity toward efficiency enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In this paper, a nonacyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 9,19-dihydrodinaphtho[3,2,1-de:3',2',1'-op]pentacene, tethered with four 4-hexylphenyl solubilizing groups is reported. The n...

Bisindeno-annulated pentacenes 3a and 3b were synthesized by a simple regio-selective, FeCl3-mediated Scholl reaction from the corresponding 6,13-diaryl pentacene precursors. The fusion of two indeno-units dramatically changes the electronic properties and chemical reactivity of pentacene and the obtained compounds exhibited exceptionally high photo-stability in the solution, with a half-life t...

By the application of an ultra fast magnetic field sweeping (2.0 × 105 T/sec) and the zero-field magnetic resonance (ZFMR)/FID techniques, we are able to probe the dynamics at the level anti-crossing region of the photo-excited triplet states of pentacene-h14 in p-terphenyl (PHPT) and pentacene-d14 in p-terphenyl (PDPT) systems. The crossing is a non-adiabatic passage at such a high jumping rat...

We report ambipolar transport in bottom gold contact, pentacene field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated by spin-coating and thermally converting its precursor on a benzocyclobutene/SiO2 gate dielectric with chemically modified source and drain electrodes. A wide range of aliphatic and aromatic self-assembled thiolate monolayers were used to derivatize the electrodes and all enhanced electron...

We have extended our functionalization strategy for pentacene to the higher acenes hexacene and heptacene. Provided a large enough alkyne substituent is used, these large aromatic rods are both stable and soluble and can be characterized spectroscopically as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

After 60 years of research, silicon solar cell efficiency saturated close to the theoretical limit, and radically new approaches are needed to further improve the efficiency. The use of tandem systems raises this theoretical power conversion efficiency limit from 34% to 45%. We present the advantageous spectral stability of using voltage-matched tandem solar cells with respect to their traditio...

We extend our previous work on singlet exciton fission in isolated dimers to the case of crystalline materials, focusing on pentacene as a canonical and concrete example. We discuss the proper interpretation of the character of low-lying excited states of relevance to singlet fission. In particular, we consider a variety of metrics for measuring charge-transfer character, conclusively demonstra...
