Abstract Background Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory virus with clinical impacts on patient morbidity, mortality and hospital bed management. The effect of rapid nucleic acid testing (RPCR) in comparison to standard multiplex PCR (MPCR) diagnosis treatment decisions unclear. This study aimed determine whether RPCR influenza MPCR was associated differences antibiotic antiviral (oselt...

To determine sensitivity of rapid diagnostic tests for detecting influenza A(H7N9) virus, we compared rapid tests with PCR results and tested different types of clinical samples. Usefulness of seasonal influenza rapid tests for A(H7N9) virus infections is limited because of their low sensitivity for detecting virus in upper respiratory tract specimens.

PCR tests for the rapid and valid detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are now available. We evaluated the costs associated with contact screening for MRSA carriage in a tertiary-care hospital with low MRSA endemicity. Between 1 October 2005 and 28 February 2006, 232 patients were screened during 258 screening episodes (644 samples) for MRSA carriage by GenoType MRSA ...

Although blood culture is considered the gold standard for detection of neonatal infections bloodstream, its result can take from 48-72 h and has low sensitivity. In this study, we determined usefulness panbacterial polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panviral RT-PCR in serum, as tests early diagnosis sepsis. We studied 195 patients with clinical sepsis, up to age 28 days, hospitalized Neonatal Int...

The goal with antibiotic therapy in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is to cure the patient, ideally without causing side effects and without contributing to the further development of antibiotic resistance. Although patients with severe CAP should be treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, patients with non-severe CAP should preferably receive pathogen-directed therapy. Rapid aetiological t...

BACKGROUND Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community acquired pneumonia; however, only a small proportion of cases can be detected by conventional methods. The ability of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test performed on whole blood samples to identify patients with pneumococcal pneumonia was investigated. METHODS One hundred and fourteen consecutive adult patients with c...

In the era of the Human Genome Project, quantitation of gene expression by tumor/host cells is of paramount importance to investigate gene patterns responsible for cancer development, progression and response/resistance to treatment. Quantitative real-time PCR (qrt-PCR) technology has recently reached a level of sensitivity, accuracy and practical ease that support its use as a routine bioinstr...

Rapid detection of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) infection is very important for control and prevention of nosocomial spread of these bacteria. A multiplex PCR method for rapid screening of VRE has recently been developed. We performed a prospective study of VRE screening tests to compare the performance of PCR to that of a chromogenic agar-based culture method. From January to Decembe...

Legionellae, which are important causes of pneumonia in humans, continue to be incorrectly labeled as exotic pathogens. The ability to diagnose Legionella infection is limited by the nonspecific nature of clinical features and the shortcomings of diagnostic tests. Despite recent improvements, existing diagnostic tests for Legionella infection either lack sensitivity for detecting all clinically...

Objectives: In this study, we compared the performance of a rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method in detecting carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPOs) and its impact on infection prevention control (IPC) measures with culture PCR method. Methods: All patients requiring CPO screening were included. Rectal swabs collected double rayon (Copan 139C). They simultaneously analyzed for presenc...
