Virulence of infectious pathogens can be unstable and evolve rapidly depending on the evolutionary dynamics of the organism. Experimental evolution can be used to characterize pathogen evolution, often with the underlying objective of understanding evolution of virulence. We used experimental evolution techniques (serial transfer experiments) to investigate differential growth and virulence of ...

Ten wet grassland species were fumigated with four concentrations of ozone (charcoal-filtered air, non-filtered air and non-filtered air plus 25 or 50 nl l(-1) ozone) in open-top chambers during one growing season to investigate the long-term effect of this air pollutant on various growth variables. Only Eupatorium cannabinum showed ozone-related foliar injury, while five species reacted with s...

Patterns of inheritance of the chloroplast genome in Passiflora were analyzed by examining the progeny from both interspecific and intraspecific crosses. Artificial crosses of field-collected material were performed in greenhouses at The University of Texas at Austin. DNA from fresh leaf material was analyzed by Southern blot techniques to identify the donor of the chloroplast genome. Initially...

Mitochondrial DNA sequences from 16S rRNA and ATPase8 genes were used to investigate phylogeographic patterns of the land snail Albinaria (Gastropoda: Clausiliidae) in the Aegean archipelago. Forty-two populations of Albinaria were analyzed, mainly A. turrita, A. caerulea and A. brevicollis, collected from 22 Aegean islands and certain surrounding regions. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood ...
