We have identified a sequence in the late 3' untranslated region of human papillomavirus type 1 mRNAs that acts posttranscriptionally to repress gene expression. Deletion analysis localized the inhibitory element to an AU-rich sequence between nucleotides 6958 and 6984 on the human papillomavirus type 1 genome. This sequence inhibits gene expression in an orientation-dependent manner. Upon tran...

Unsightly horny outgrowths in the skin of the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) have been reported in the Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga and two giraffes were euthanased due to this condition. A sable antelope (Hippotragus niger), on a game farm in the Kimberley district, Northern Cape, exhibited lameness due to a cutaneous growth, which was removed surgically. Papillomavirus was detected elec...

The L-X-C-X-E pRB-binding motif of papillomavirus (PV) E7 proteins has been implicated in the immortalization and transformation of the host cell. However, sequencing of the complete genomes of bovine papillomavirus type 3 (BPV-3), bovine papillomavirus type 5 (BPV-5), equine papillomavirus (EQPV) and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) papillomavirus (RPV) supports the notion that the pRB-binding mot...

The discovery of novel viruses in animals expands our knowledge of viral diversity and potentially emerging zoonoses. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) technology gives millions or even billions of sequence reads per run, allowing a comprehensive survey of the genetic content within a sample without prior nucleic acid amplification. In this study, we screened 156 rectal swab samples from apparen...

PURPOSE Studies have been done of the possibility that infection by human papillomavirus is a risk factor contributing to bladder cancer but no definite conclusions have yet been drawn. We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies published until July 2005 to ascertain the degree of association between bladder cancer and human papillomavirus infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS The MEDLI...

Here, we present the complete genome sequence of bovine papillomavirus genotype 13 isolated from local yellow cattle in Hainan, China. The genome is 7,961 bp and contains six early genes and two late genes. This analysis provides important information for the research of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) in China.

Papillomaviruses have been linked to several skin disorders in the dog. In order to have a suitable diagnostic tool for canine papillomavirus detection, eight PCRs with published primer combinations were evaluated. The most sensitive PCR was used to demonstrate that papillomavirus DNA can be detected on nonlesional skin of dogs.

Bovine papillomavirus E1 protein was found to be as efficient as the simian virus 40 large T antigen in initiating DNA synthesis in a cell-free system derived from COS1 cells. Multiple rounds of DNA synthesis occur, initiated at the bovine papillomavirus type 1 origin. Therefore, E1 functions in vitro as a lytic virus initiator.

Nearly all cervical cancers are etiologically attributable to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and pharmaceutical treatments targeting HPV-infected cells would be of great medical benefit. Because many neoplastic cells (including cervical cancer cells) overexpress the transferrin receptor to increase their iron uptake, we hypothesized that iron-dependent, antimalarial drugs such as artemisi...
