PURPOSE This study was conducted to examine whether the effects of growth factors are mediated in the lens by Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathways and whether they induce expression of suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS), a novel family of feedback regulators of cytokine and growth factor activities. METHODS STAT activation and SOCS expressi...

Expression of many MHC genes is enhanced at the transcriptional or posttranscriptional level following exposure to the cytokine IFN-gamma. However, in this study we found that IFN-gamma down-regulated the constitutive expression of the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), an MHC class I-related molecule that functions to transport maternal IgG and protect IgG and albumin from degradation. Epithelial ce...

Limited responsiveness to IFN-alpha in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected African-Americans compared to European Americans (AAs vs. EAs) hinders the management of HCV. Here, we studied healthy non-HCV-infected AA and EA subjects to test whether immune cell response to IFN-alpha is determined directly by race. We compared baseline and IFN-alpha-induced signal transducer and activator of transcript...

Persistent tyrosine phosphorylation of Stat3 and Stat5 is associated with oncogenic activity. Phosphorylation of the conserved tyrosine residue (pTyr) was long believed to be the only essential prerequisite to promote activation and nuclear translocation of Stat proteins. It has become evident, however, that post-translational protein modifications like serine phosphorylation, acetylation, glyc...

AIMS Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) continues to be an unsolved clinical problem requiring the development of new therapeutic strategies. We have previously demonstrated that ex vivo donor allograft treatment with decoy oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) targeting the transcription factors, activator protein-1 (AP-1) or signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 (STAT-1), delays acute re...

Based on a sample of 4.4 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected in the energy region between 4.6 GeV and 4.7 with BESIII detector at BEPCII, two singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow \Sigma^0 K^+$ $\Lambda_{c}^{+} \Sigma^+ K_{S}^0$ are studied. The ratio branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_c^+ K^+)$ relative to \pi^+)$ is measured be $0.0361 \pm 0.00...

Morphological studies and phylogenetic analysis based on the ITS sequence data showed that there is considerable differences within the Puccinia striiformis complex on members of Triticeae(Triticum and Hordeum), Dactylis glomerata and Poa pratensis. Based on the above molecular and morphological data, we suggest dividing P. striiformis as follows: - P. striiformis s. str. mainly on Triticeae. -...

In acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and adult T-cell leukemia, it has been demonstrated that the transcription factor LIL-STAT is constitutively activated. To identify and characterize this unknown LIL-STAT protein, electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and oligoprecipitation assays were performed by using lipopolysaccharide/interleukin-1 (IL-1)-responsive element (LILRE) oligonucleotide ...

From an analysis of the decay Bs0-->J/psi phi, we obtain the width difference between the light and heavy mass eigenstates DeltaGamma identical with (GammaL-GammaH)=0.17+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.02(syst) ps-1 and the CP-violating phase phis=-0.79+/-0.56(stat)(-0.01)(+0.14)(syst). Under the hypothesis of no CP violation (phis identical with 0), we obtain 1/Gamma=tau(Bs0)=1.52+/-0.08(stat)(-0.03)(+0.01)(...
