The outer membrane proteins of Bordetella avium were examined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Sarkosyl-insoluble outer membrane protein-enriched profiles from 50 virulent B. avium isolates, containing major 21,000- and 37,000-molecular-weight proteins (21K and 37K proteins, respectively) and at least 13 less intensely stained proteins with molecular weights ranging...

A number of polyacrylamide gel systems and solubilization procedures were studied to define the number and nature of "major" polypeptide bands in the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was shown that five of the eight major outer membrane proteins were "heat modifiable" in that their mobility on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was determined by the solubiliza...

The nucleotide sequence of the faeD gene of Escherichia coli and the amino acid sequence of its product is presented. The faeD product is an outer membrane protein required for transport of K88ab fimbrial subunits across the outer membrane. The protein is synthesized as a precursor containing a signal peptide, and the tentative mature protein comprises 777 amino acid residues. The distribution ...

The arrangement of protein I in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli was investigated by cross-linking whole cells, isolated cell wall, protein-peptidoglycan complexes, and protein I released from peptidoglycan with NaCl. Both cleavable azide cross-linkers and imidoester reagents were used. The data presented suggest that protein I exists in the outer membrane as a trimer.

The gram-negative anaerobic bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis is an etiologically important pathogen for chronic periodontal diseases in adults. Our previous study suggested that the major structural components of both Fim and Mfa fimbriae in this organism are secreted through their lipidated precursors. In this study, we constructed Escherichia coli strains expressing various fimA genes with ...

Most chloroplast outer-membrane proteins are synthesized at their mature size without cleavable targeting signals. Their insertion into the outer membrane is insensitive to thermolysin pretreatment of chloroplasts and does not require ATP. It has therefore been assumed that insertion of outer-membrane proteins proceeds through a different pathway from import into the interior of chloroplasts, w...

Reductively [3H]methylated 3H mitochondrial-outer-membrane vesicles from rat liver and vesicles where monoamine oxidase has been derivatized irreversibly by [3H]-pargyline have been deliberately miscompartmentalized by heterologous transplantation into hepatoma (HTC) cells by poly(ethylene glycol)-mediated vesicle-cell fusion. Fluorescein-conjugated mitochondrial-outer-membrane vesicles have al...

MOTIVATION Outer membrane beta-barrels (OMBBs) are the proteins found in the outer membrane of bacteria, mitochondria and chloroplasts. There are thousands of beta-barrels reported in genomic databases with ∼2-3% of the genes in gram-negative bacteria encoding these proteins. These proteins have a wide variety of biological functions including active and passive transport, cell adhesion, cataly...

The mitochondrial outer membrane contains translocase complexes for the import of precursor proteins. The translocase of the outer membrane complex functions as a general preprotein entry gate, whereas the sorting and assembly machinery complex mediates membrane insertion of β-barrel proteins of the outer membrane. Several α-helical outer membrane proteins are known to carry multiple transmembr...

Differential analysis of outer membrane composition of S. Enteritidis strains, resistant to 50% normal human serum (NHS) was performed in order to find factors influencing the resistance to higher concentrations of NHS. Ten S. Enteritidis clinical strains, resistant to 50% NHS, all producing very long lipopolysaccharide, were subjected to the challenge of 75% NHS. Five extreme strains: two resi...
