Images rendered by uncooled microbolometer-based infrared (IR) cameras are severely degraded by the spatial non-uniformity (NU) noise. The NU noise imposes a fixed-pattern over the true images, and the intensity of the pattern changes with time due to the temperature instability of such cameras. In this paper, we present a novel model and a compensation algorithm for the spatial NU noise and it...

Four species of probiotic bacteria were assessed for their capacities to protect athymic bg/bg-nu/nu and euthymic bg/bg-nu/+ mice from mucosal and systemic candidiasis. Each bacterial species and Candida albicans colonized the gastrointestinal tracts of both strains of mice. The presence of probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus casei GG, or Bifidoba...

BACKGROUND Murine leukemia virus, LP-BM5, induces severe immunodeficiency with abnormal lymphoproliferation in susceptible C57BL/6 mice. In a previous study, it was shown that a Sjögren's syndrome-like systemic exocrinopathy is induced in the virus infected mice. AIMS To examine lymphocyte functions of the virus infected mice. METHODS Four-week old mice were inoculated with the virus and th...

We present a new method for estimating the number of solutions of constraint satisfaction problems’. We use a stochastic forward checking algorithm for drawing a sample of paths from a search tree. With this sample, we compute two values related to the number of solutions of a CSP instance. First, an unbiased estimate, second, a lower bound with an arbitrary low error probability. We will descr...

New low-lying excitations are observed by inelastic light scattering at filling factors nu=p/(phip+/-1) of the fractional quantum Hall regime with phi=4. Coexisting with these modes throughout the range nu < or =1/3 are phi=2 excitations seen at 1/3. Both phi=2 and phi=4 excitations have distinct behaviors with temperature and filling factor. The abrupt first appearance of the new modes in the ...

We study numerically the roughness exponent zeta of an in-plane fracture front slowly propagating along a heterogeneous interface embedded in an elastic body, using a model based on the evolution of a process zone rather than a fracture line. We find zeta=0.60+/-0.05. For the first time, simulation results are in close agreement with experimental results. We then show that the roughness exponen...

We have measured the quantum-Hall activation gaps in graphene at filling factors nu=2 and nu=6 for magnetic fields up to 32 T and temperatures from 4 to 300 K. The nu=6 gap can be described by thermal excitation to broadened Landau levels with a width of 400 K. In contrast, the gap measured at nu=2 is strongly temperature and field dependent and approaches the expected value for sharp Landau le...

This Letter reports on a search for nu(mu) --> nu(e) transitions by the MINOS experiment based on a 3.14x10(20) protons-on-target exposure in the Fermilab NuMI beam. We observe 35 events in the Far Detector with a background of 27+/-5(stat)+/-2(syst) events predicted by the measurements in the Near Detector. If interpreted in terms of nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillations, this 1.5sigma excess of event...

Using 4.68 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have studied tau radiative decays tau(-)-->nu(tau)&mgr;(-)nu;(&mgr;)gamma and tau(-)-->nu(tau)e(-)nu;(e)gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction for radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+/-0.16+/-0...
