Purpose Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a rare, yet severe complication following radiation therapy for brain, head and neck, or skull-base tumors. Although several risk factors, such as age, metabolic syndrome, delivered dose, have been identified, we aimed at expanding the understanding of mechanisms interplay regarding dosimetry patient variables leading to onset RION with focus...
Background: Presence of artifacts, caused by dental filling high-Z materials (DFM), on intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment plan CT images may lead to uncertainty in head and neck calculated dose distributions. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of DFM on the IMRT calculated dose distribution and consequent radiobiological derived outcomes for naso...
This study reviewed prostate volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) plans after prostate IMRT technique was replaced by VMAT in an institution. Characterizations of dosimetry and radiobiological variation in prostate were determined based on treatment plans of 40 prostate IMRT patients (planning target volume = 77.8-335 cm(3)) and 50 VMAT pati...
The BANG polymer gel dosimeter was used to evaluate 3D absorbed dose distributions in tissue delivered with Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery systems. We compared dose distributions calculated with Leksell GammaPlan (LGP) treatment-planning software with dose distributions measured with the polymer gel dosimeter for single-shot irradiations. Head-sized spherical glass vessels filled with th...
The present study compared the dosimetry of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) techniques in patients treated for high-grade glioma. A total of 20 patients underwent computed tomography treatment planning in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging fusion. Prescription dose and normal-tissue constraints were identical for t...
PurposeTo evaluate changes in diffusion and perfusion-related properties of white matter (WM) induced by proton therapy, which is capable a greater dose sparing to organs at risk with respect conventional X-ray radiotherapy, eventually expose early manifestations delayed neuro-toxicities.MethodsApparent coefficient (ADC) IVIM parameters (D, D* f) were estimated from diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI)...
Two patients, intubated for inoperable carcinoma of the oesophagus, recently presented with their tubes blocked by granulation tissue. This complication has not been previously reported. The tissue macroscopically resembled normal mucosa in one and recurrent tumour in the other. The presentation, aetiology, and significance of this granulation tissue is discussed.
