The magnetic structure of Ce0.9La0.1RhIn5 is measured using neutron diffraction. It is identical to the incommensurate transverse spiral for CeRhIn5, with a magnetic wave vector qM = (1/2, 1/2, 0.297), a staggered moment of 0.38(2)μB at 1.4K and a reduced Néel temperature of 2.7 K.

A longitudinal sound wave modulates the regular arrangement of the atomic planes of a crystal in two ways: first, the spacing between the atomic planes is modified in the regions of compression and expansion introducing a macroscopic strain and, second, the lattice planes acquire a velocity in the oscillating strain field. Bragg reflection in a strained crystal maintains the energy of the radia...

We report on numerical results from an independent formalism to describe the quasiequilibrium structure of nonsynchronous binary neutron stars in general relativity. This is an important independent test of controversial numerical hydrodynamic simulations which suggested that nonsynchronous neutron stars in a close binary can experience compression prior to the last stable circular orbit. We sh...

We suggest an explanation for the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) based on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) oscillation modes in neutron star magnetospheres. Including the effect of the neutron star spin, we derive several MHD wave modes by solving the dispersion equations, and propose that the coupling of the two resonant MHD modes may lead to...

The presence of a viscous boundary layer under the solid crust of a neutron star dramatically increases the viscous damping rate of the fluid r-modes. We improve previous estimates of this damping rate by including the effect of the Coriolis force on the boundary-layer eigenfunction and by using more realistic neutron-star models. If the crust is assumed to be perfectly rigid, the gravitational...

Neutron diffraction analysis was employed to measure residual stresses near welds in used anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks. Tensile residual stresses contribute to stress corrosion cracking of nurse tanks, which can cause tanks to release toxic ammonia vapor. The analysis showed that tensile residual stresses were present in the tanks measured, and the magnitudes of these stresses approached the y...

We investigate the 1S0 neutron and proton superfluidity in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We have concentrated on the isospin dependence of the pairing gaps and the effect of a microscopic three-body force. It is found that as the isospin asymmetry goes higher, the neutron 1S0 superfluid phase shrinks gradually to a smaller density domain, while the proton one extends rapidly to a much wide...

It is believed that quark stars or neutron stars with mixed phase in the core have smaller radii compared to ordinary compact stars. With the recent observation of several low radius objects, typically a radius of < 10Km. for star of mass < 1M0 in low mass Xray binaries (LMXB) , it has become very important to understand the nature of these objects. An accurate determination of mass-radius rela...

Inelastic neutron-scattering spectra were measured on stoichiometric Fe0.50Cr0.50 prepared as a bodycentered-cubic bcc solid solution, and after increasing amounts of chemical unmixing on the bcc lattice induced by annealing the solid solution at 773 K. These spectra were reduced by a conventional procedure to a neutron-weighted vibrational density of states. Mössbauer spectrometry was used to ...
