Group  streptococci (GÂS) are rare causes of myositis and myonecrosis involving adult patients in tropical regions. Streotococcal myositis is associated with a wide clinical spectrum, ranging from a subacute localized form with good prognosis to a serious acute presentation involving rapidly progressive disease, shock, multiple organ failure and a high case fatality rate (80-100%). Ïn ...
or discontinue AZA/MTX had been made at consultant level, despite previous reports that transaminase elevations may be found in myositis [2–4] and other muscle diseases [4–6]. Transaminases are important intracellular components of metabolic function in many cells, including those of muscle, and elevated ALT levels may reflect transaminase leakage into the bloodstream, due to myofibrillar damag...
Focal myositis is considered a rare self-limiting inflammatory swelling of skeletal muscle. Focal involvement of individual muscle or muscle groups with severe myopathic and inflammatory changes characterizes the histology. We report the development of progressive focal myositis in both upper eyelids of a 34 year old man that responded to immunosuppressive therapy.
Myositis ossificans traumatica is a rare clinical entity in the maxillofacial region. We present a case of myositis ossificans traumatica of the temporalis muscle following dental treatment in the form of a clinicopathologic conference. A review of the literature supporting our findings is provided.
Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare autosomal dominant disease with less than 1,000 case reports. Such patients present edema, caused by inflammatory processes that progressively calcify, and with loss of mobility in the region affected. The objective of this study was to describe a case of myositis ossificans progressiva, present its clinical manifestations and discuss the treatments ava...
During the influenza epidemic of 1998-1999, we observed two elderly patients with influenza-like symptoms who had evidence of acute myositis with elevated serum enzymes. Influenza A infection was confirmed serologically in either case. The present cases suggest that it is important to distinguish influenzal myositis from other forms of myopathy in the elderly patients.
Inclusion body myositis is a progressive disease of the skeletal muscle. Here, specific theories of its pathogenesis are reviewed and general considerations pertaining to modeling of this disease discussed. Understanding of inclusion body myositis disease mechanism remains extremely poor. Current published animal models do not represent the disease. Future studies need to consider the critical ...
Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in 20 JDM patients. Pulmonary function test included spirometry, body plethysmography and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO). They were also carried out six-minute walk test (6MWT) and HRCT scan. Disease activity score (DAS), childhood myositis assessment scale (CMAS), myositis damage index (MDI) and HRQL (Pediatric Quality of Life Invent...
