We analyze phase matching with reference to frequency doubling in nanosized quadratic waveguides encompassing form birefringence and supporting cross-polarized fundamental and second-harmonic modes. In an AlGaAs rod with an air void, we show that phase-matched second-harmonic generation could be achieved in a wide spectral range employing state-of-the-art nanotechnology.

Repeating boundaries: the buried interfaces in artificial heterostructures produced by sequential deposition of nanosized units are critical to their properties. With density functional theory it was shown that in Y(2)O(3):ZrO(2) (YSZ) and SrTiO(3) (STO) heterostructures reconstruction of the interfaces between the component units is required to access the most favorable structure.

Single crystalline anatase TiO(2) rods with dominant reactive {010} facets are directly synthesized by hydrothermally treating Cs(0.68)Ti(1.83)O(4)/H(0.68)Ti(1.83)O(4) particles. The nanosized rods show a comparable conversion efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), and a superior photocatalytic conversion of CO(2) into methane to the benchmark P25 TiO(2) nanocrystals.

Nanosized anatase TiO(2) single crystals with 18% {001} facets have a raised conduction band minimum by 0.1 eV, and exhibit photocatalytic activity both for generating *OH radicals and for splitting water into hydrogen that is markedly superior--by factors of 5.6 and 8.2, respectively--to reference ca. 3 microm anatase TiO(2) with 72% {001} facets.

Asymmetric zinc porphyrin (ZnPy) was synthesized and used to sensitize nanosized TiO2. The visible-light-driven activity of CO2 photoreduction to generate CO/CH4 in the gas phase was observed from the ZnPy-sensitized TiO2 without loading noble metal, and the mechanism was discussed.
