Millimetre-sized mesoporous carbon spheres (MMCSs) with smooth surface and penetrating mesoporous channels have been successfully prepared by an emulsion-EISA technique, and are found to be a much better bilirubin adsorbent than commercial activated carbon spheres. Hemolysis and coagulation assays of MMCSs indicate that they have negligible hemolysis effect and do not induce blood coagulation.

We present a study of electrocatalysis by an enzyme adsorbed on a range of carbon materials, with different size, surface area, morphology and graphitic structure, which are either commercially available or prepared via simple, established protocols. We choose as our model enzyme the hydrogenase I from E. coli (Hyd-1), which is an active catalyst for H2 oxidation, is relatively robust and has b...

Application of Raman spectroscopy to analyse carbon nanotubes has been presented. Having a mixture of various carbon nanotube samples, one can easily distinguish, in a quick experiment, presence of singlewalled, doublewalled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT, DWCNT, MWCNT, respectively). The so-called G-line is a characteristic feature of the graphitic layers and corresponds to the tangen...

We investigate the aerobic oxidation of high-pressure, high-temperature nanodiamonds (5-50 nm dimensions) using a combination of carbon and oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption, wavelength-dependent X-ray photoelectron, and vibrational spectroscopies. Oxidation at 575 °C for 2 h eliminates graphitic carbon contamination (>98%) and produces nanocrystals with hydroxyl functionalized surfaces as well as...

Nanostructuring earth-abundant metals as single atoms or clusters of controlled size on suitable carriers opens new routes to develop high-performing heterogeneous catalysts, but resolving speciation trends remains challenging. Here, we investigate the potential low-nuclearity iron catalysts in continuous liquid-phase semi-hydrogenation various alkynes. The activity depends multiple factors, in...

Recently, there has been great interest in the synthesis and application of various kinds of nanostructured noble metals such as platinum, gold and silver. Nanostructured silvers have been widely investigated as antimicrobial materials, bio-sensors, catalysts, and advanced materials exhibiting surface plasmon resonance and surface enhanced Raman scattering. All this research is mainly based on ...

In the present work, well ordered, mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) sorbent with uniform mesoporous wall, high surface area and pore volume has been fabricated using the simple polymerization reaction between ethylene diamine and carbon tetrachloride in mesoporous silica media, and then modified by TiO2 nanoparticles (Ti-MCN). The structural order and textural properties of the nanoporous materi...

A theoretical study of diamond/silicon (001) interface structures with and without graphitic interlayers using a density functional based tight–binding molecular dynamics method is presented. The study is motivated by recent progress towards diamond heteroepitaxy on Si (001) using the bias technique. The proposal by Robertson (1995) that an initial graphitic deposit with the graphite planes nor...

An hydrogenated nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitride, structurally related to the theoretical graphitic phase of C3N4, has been synthesized in a bulk wellcrystallized form. This new material was prepared by thermal decomposition of thiosemicarbazide up to 600°C at ambient pressure under nitrogen flow. Its composition was determined by elemental combustion analysis. Powder X-ray diffraction, i...
