Multicopy single-stranded DNA (msDNA) is a short single-stranded linear DNA originally discovered in Myxococcus xanthus and subsequently found in Stigmatella aurantiaca. It exists at an estimated 500 to 700 copies per chromosome (T. Yee, T. Furuichi, S. Inouye, and M. Inouye, Cell 38:203-209, 1984). We found msDNA in other myxobacteria, including Myxococcus coralloides, Cystobacter violaceus, C...

The antibiotic stigmatellin was purified from the gliding bacterium Stigmatella aurantiaca [1] and its inhibition of the mitochondrial cytochrome bcl-com plex was characterized in detail [2—4]. Stigmatellin was found to affect the mitochondrial cytochrome bc7-complex at the ubiquinol oxidation site (Q nsite), shifting the a-peak of cytochrome b to the red and raising the redox potential of the ...

The molecular basis by which organisms detect and respond to fluctuations in inorganic carbon is not known. The cyaB1 gene of the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC7120 codes for a multidomain protein with a C-terminal class III adenylyl cyclase catalyst that was specifically stimulated by bicarbonate ion (EC50 9.6 mm). Bicarbonate lowered substrate affinity but increased reaction velocity. A poin...

Corallococcus coralloides, like most other myxobacteria, undergoes a developmental program culminating in the formation of fruiting bodies. C. coralloides fruiting bodies are morphologically distinct from those of other fruiting myxobacteria for which full-length genome sequences are available. The genome sequence of the 10.0-Mb C. coralloides genome is presented herein.

The gram-negative myxobacterium Sorangium cellulosum So ce56 bears the largest bacterial genome published so far, coding for nearly 10,000 genes. Careful analysis of this genome data revealed that part of the genes coding for the very well conserved biosynthesis of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are missing in this microbe. Biochemical analysis gave no evidence for the presence of LPS in the membran...
