Axonal ensheathment and myelination, one form of axon-sheath cell interaction, was studied under normal earth magnetism, in the absence of terrestrial magnetic field, and under a 5 G (0.0005 T) magnetic field. Results indicate that the geomagnetic field is necessary for the fundamental biological activity of axonal ensheathment and myelination. The exact mechanism of action remains obscure.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Pelizaeus-Merzbacher's disease (PMD) is caused by mutations in the proteolipid protein (PLP) gene. Recent studies have shown that an increased PLP dosage, resulting from total duplication of the PLP gene, invariably causes the classic form of PMD. The purpose of this study was to compare the MR findings of PMD attributable to PLP duplication with those of PMD arising from...
ome cells can induce the production of their own protective blanket. The signal comes from active neurons in the central nervous system (CNS), and triggers the differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs)—thus yielding the cells that cover the neurons with a protective sheath of myelin. Now, Beth Stevens, Douglas Fields, and colleagues (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD) ...
Laminins and collagens are extracellular matrix proteins that play essential roles in peripheral nervous system development. Laminin signals regulate Schwann cell proliferation and survival as well as actin cytoskeleton dynamics, which are essential steps for radial sorting and myelination of peripheral axons by Schwann cells. Collagen and their receptors promote Schwann cell adhesion, spreadin...
Myelin is essential for rapid and accurate conduction of electrical impulses by axons in the central and peripheral nervous system (PNS). Myelin is formed in the early postnatal period, and developmental myelination in the PNS depends on axonal signals provided by Nrg1/ErbB receptors. In addition, Nrg1 is required for effective nerve repair and remyelination in adulthood. We discuss here simila...
This research paper investigates the consequences of technological overstimulation on productivity. By establishing a structural basis conscious and subconscious effects technology usage mind, through artificial stimuli Dopamine release myelination neural pathways, proportionate relationship between varying degrees person's productive output can be determined: signified by fluctuations in quant...
Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids, particularly in infants, albeit rare, may lead to Cushing syndrome. Central nervous system abnormalities including brain atrophy and delayed myelination on cranial magnetic resonance imaging has been reported in patients with corticosteroid treatment. We herein report a 5-month-old female infant referred to Department of Pediatric Endocrinology, Edirne,...
Mechanistic studies of CNS myelination have been hindered by the lack of a rapidly myelinating culture system. Here, we describe a versatile CNS coculture method that allows time-lapse microscopy and molecular analysis of distinct stages of myelination. Employing a culture architecture of reaggregated neurons fosters extension of dense beds of axons from purified retinal ganglion cells. Seeding...
