Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in children under the age of 5 years. Almost 2 million children die from ARTIs each year, and most of them are from developing countries. The prevalence and correlation of pathogens in ARTIs are poorly understood, but are critical for improving case prevention, treatment, and...
The pathogenesis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was studied in the Syrian hamster with qualitative and quantitative culture methods and special histopathologic techniques. The animals were readily infected with the mycoplasma, which multiplied throughout the respiratory tract. Sensitivity of this experimental host to infection was indicated by the 50 per cent infective dose, which was 10 co...
A previously healthy 30-year-old woman developed severe ARDS at the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 infection was suspected, but testing negative. Mycoplasma pneumoniae detected by PCR in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood. This case illustrates that M. can progress to septicemia with respiratory failure young adults.
Members of the Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' represent important livestock pathogens worldwide. Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides is the etiologic agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), which is still endemic in many parts of Africa. We report the genome sequences and annotation of two frequently used challenge strains of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, Afadé and B237. The inf...
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is one of the most common causes of respiratory infections in children and adults worldwide [1,2]. This bacterial pathogen is estimated to be responsible for at least one case of pneumonia per 1,000 persons and .100,000 adult hospitalizations per year in the United States alone [1–3]. The infection is mostly mild, but all age groups can experience more severe disease, and ...
The aetiology of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is heterogeneous and still under discussion. Serological studies have suggested that Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila may play a role in acute exacerbations of COPD. The presence of these atypical pathogens in sputum samples was investigated in patients with stable COPD and...
AIMS To evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae (TWAR) in relation to other aetiological agents of acute respiratory infections in Israeli patients. METHOD Serum samples from 604 patients (183 children and 421 adults) were collected over three years. Antibodies to C pneumoniae, C trachomatis, and Legionella sp were evaluated using the microimmunofluorescence (MIF) assay....
Selection of resistant mutants in sequential subcultures with increasing concentrations of six and four different fluoroquinolones was studied for one reference strain each of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Mycoplasma hominis, respectively. All fluoroquinolones tested selected for resistance, with alterations affecting the quinolone resistance-determining regions of the four target topoisomerase genes.
A case of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia complicated by anterior uveitis is described. Anterior uveitis as a complication has not been reported before. Its possible mechanism is discussed.
The mechanism of the neurologic complications associated with primary atypical pneumonia is unknown. To examine the ability of Mycoplasma pneumoniae to enter the brain of experimental animals, the organism was inoculated into adult and suckling mice by various routes. After intranasal infection, M. pneumoniae was isolated from brains and lungs of both groups of mice. After intracerebral inocula...
