AIMS To compare conventional phenotypic methods for the detection of methicillin and mupirocin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus in routine laboratory practice with reference to an established molecular method. METHODS This study was conducted on a selection of 65 isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from a burns unit in India which is endemic for MRSA. The Kirby-B...

OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine the frequency of qacA/B chlorhexidine tolerance genes and high-level mupirocin resistance among MRSA isolates before and after the introduction of a chlorhexidine (CHG) daily bathing intervention in a surgical intensive care unit (SICU). DESIGN Retrospective cohort study (2005-2012) SETTING: A large tertiary-care center PATIENTS Patients admitted to SICU who ...

BACKGROUND Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continues to be a major cause of serious infections in hospitals and in the community worldwide. In this study, MRSA isolated from patients in Kuwait hospitals were analyzed for resistance trends and the genetic location of their resistance determinants. METHODS Between April 1994 and December 2004, 5644 MRSA isolates obtained from...

This novel study investigated the loading of mupirocin nanoparticles into a hydrogel which was expected to enhance antibacterial activity mupirocin. The inhibition isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase and global gene expression in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) by nanoparticle-loaded (MLH) pure compared. MLH rapidly inhibited growth bacterial populations after 1 h treatment. At 12 h, M...

OBJECTIVES The goals were to determine the prevalence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization in patients with atopic dermatitis and to determine whether suppression of S aureus growth with sodium hypochlorite (bleach) baths and intranasal mupirocin treatment improves eczema severity. METHODS A randomized, investigator-blinded, placebo-controlled study w...

OBJECTIVES The primary objective of this study is to determine whether daily exit-site application of standardized antibacterial honey (Medihoney Antibacterial Wound Gel; Comvita, Te Puke, New Zealand) results in a reduced risk of catheter-associated infections in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients compared with standard topical mupirocin prophylaxis of nasal staphylococcal carriers. DESIGN Mu...

An outbreak of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) occurred in two adjacent orthopaedic wards following the admission of a known carrier. The outbreak was not contained by ward closure or by standard infection control measures. Eventually several nasal carriers were identified and treated with nasal mupirocin, following which the outbreak ended.

Inmates of Rikers Island jail potentially introduce Staphylococcus aureus into New York State prisons upon transfer. In this study, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates (n = 452), collected from infected inmates (2009 to 2013), were characterized. spa type t008 was the predominant clone identified, accounting for 82.3% of the isolates, with no evidence of mupirocin or chlorhexid...
