We determined the types of cholera toxin (CT) produced by a collection of 185 Vibrio cholerae O1 strains isolated in Bangladesh over the past 45 years. All of the El Tor strains of V. cholerae O1 isolated since 2001 produced CT of the classical biotype, while those isolated before 2001 produced CT of the El Tor biotype.

Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor biotype strains are responsible for three multiyear epidemics of cholera in China during the seventh ongoing pandemic. The presence of the integrative conjugative element SXT is strongly correlated with resistance to nalidixic acid, tetracycline, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in these strains. Here, we sequenced the conserved genes of the SXT element, including eex...

Vibrio cholerae O139 Bengal emerged in 1992 and rapidly spread in an epidemic form, in which it replaced existing strains of V. cholerae O1 in Bangladesh during 1992 and 1993. The subsequent emergence of a new clone of V. cholerae O1 of the El Tor biotype that transiently displaced the O139 vibrios during 1994 to 1995 and the recent reemergence of V. cholerae O139 and its coexistence with the E...

BACKGROUND The cholera outbreaks in Thailand during 2007-2010 were exclusively caused by the Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor variant carrying the cholera toxin gene of the classical biotype. We previously isolated a V. cholerae O1 El Tor strain from a patient with diarrhea and designated it MS6. Multilocus sequence-typing analysis revealed that MS6 is most closely related to the U. S. Gulf Coast clon...

Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease typically caused by O1 serogroup strains of Vibrio cholerae. The pathogenicity of all pandemic V. cholerae O1 strains relies on two critical virulence factors: cholera toxin, a potent enterotoxin, and toxin coregulated pilus (TCP), an intestinal colonization factor. However, certain non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae strains, such as AM-19226, do not produce chol...

background cholera is a severe diarrheal illness caused by vibrio cholerae, which produces a virulence factor named el tor hemolysin encoded by the hlya gene. objectives this study meant to analyze the phenotypic characteristics and presence of hlya gene in v. cholerae isolated from patients in iran. the hlya gene which codes for hemolysin, plays an essential role in manifestation of cholera ,a...

We examined the capability of 12 isolates of non-cholera toxin-producing O1 and non-O1 Vibrio cholerae to colonize the small intestine of adult rabbits and cause diarrhea. Using the removable intestinal tie-adult rabbit diarrhea model, we found that eight environmental isolates that showed no or marginal biological activity in other diarrhea models (rabbit ileal loop, infant rabbit, and sucklin...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Epidemics of cholera caused by toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 (Bengal strain) represent a major public health problem in most developing countries. In view of the reported shift in epidemiology and pattern of antibiotic resistance in this was study carried out to assess the development of resistance to essential drugs like fluoroquinolones during treatment of chole...

The recognition of handwritten numeral is an important area of research for its applications in post office, banks and other organizations. This paper presents automatic recognition of handwritten Kannada numerals based on structural features. Five different types of features, namely, profile based 10-segment string, water reservoir; vertical and horizontal strokes, end points and average bound...

Let K be a totally real algebraic number field and O an order in a quaternion algebra A over K. Assume that the group O1 of units in O with reduced norm equal to 1 is embedded into PSL2(R) as an arithmetic Fuchsian group. It is shown how Ford’s algorithm can be effectively applied in order to determine a fundamental domain of O1 as well as a complete system of generators of O1.
