First principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, of water adsorption on the MgOf100g surface, was performed to determine the molecular structure and chemical nature of the adsorbed water at varying coverage. Dissociative adsorption was stabilized by hydrogen bond donation from neighboring water molecules. The dissociation barrier had a strong dependence on coverage. Spontaneous dissociatio...

malicorium supported ni0.5zn0.5fe2o4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized by a low-cost, simple, and environmentally benign procedure. the adsorbent was characterized by several methods includingx-ray diffraction (xrd), scanning electron microscopy (sem) and fourier transform infraredspectroscopy (ft-ir). then, the potential of malicorium supported ni0.5zn0.5fe2o4 magneticnanoparticles was in...

Macroscopic properties of aqueous β-lactoglobulin (BLG) foams and the molecular properties of BLG modified air-water interfaces as their major structural element were investigated with a unique combination of foam rheology measurements and interfacial sensitive methods such as sum-frequency generation and interfacial dilatational rheology. The molecular structure and protein-protein interaction...

We report further molecular dynamics simulations on the structure of bound hydration layers under extreme confinement between mica surfaces. We find that the liquid phase of water is maintained down to 2 monolayer (ML) thick, whereas the structure of the K(+) ion hydration shell is close to the bulk structure even under D = 0.92 nm confinement. Unexpectedly, the density of confined water remain...

Here, we combine experiments with Langmuir trough and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the reasons for the special properties of layers from the protein HFBII hydrophobin spread on the air-water interface. The hydrophobin interfacial layers possess the highest surface dilatational and shear elastic moduli among all investigated proteins. The AFM images show that the spread HFBII lay...

Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) monolayers of a surfactant derivative of ruthenium tris(bipyridine) complex, Ru(bpy)2(bpy-C19)2+, where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and C19 = CH2NHOC(CH2),,CH3, confined to the surface of an indium-tin oxide electrode have been studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) carried out in a Langmuir trough. The surfactant monolayer spread on an electrolyte subphase solution was brought to...

The mechanisms of cold and pressure denaturation of proteins are a matter of debate, but it is commonly accepted that water plays a fundamental role in the process. It has been proposed that the denaturation process is related to an increase of hydrogen bonds among hydration water molecules. Other theories suggest that the causes of denaturation are the density fluctuations of surface water, or...

By mimicking the hydrophobicity and miniature protrusions of the lotus leaves using a monolayer of non-fluorinated hydrophobic polymer and functionalized nanoparticles, respectively, we have developed a permanent nanocoating to create ultrahydrophobic fibers/textiles with excellent water repellency and self-cleaning ability.

An improved synthesis of a 3,4 hydroxypyridinone (HOPO) functionalized mesoporous silica is described. Higher 3,4-HOPO monolayer ligand loadings have been achieved, resulting in better performance. Performance improvements were demonstrated with the capture of U(VI) from human blood, plasma and filtered river water.
