The angiosperm genus Silene exhibits some of the most extreme and rapid divergence ever identified in mitochondrial genome architecture and nucleotide substitution rates. These patterns have been considered mitochondrial specific based on the absence of correlated changes in the small number of available nuclear and plastid gene sequences. To better assess the relationship between mitochondrial...

The complete mitochondrial genome of Aluterus monoceros (A. monoceros) has been sequenced. The mitochondrial genome of A. monoceros is 16,429 bp in length, consisting of 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes and a D-loop region (Gen Bank accession number KP637022). The base A + T of the mitochondrial genome is 63.25%, including 33.16% of A, 30.09% of T and 20.74% of C. Twelve pro...

Background and Objectives: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an inherited disorder and a rare form of colorectal cancer. This disease appears equally in both sexes and its occurrence is more in the second or third decade of life. Mutations and alterations of the mitochondrial genome, especially the D-loop region, have been reported in various human tumors. But the exact role of these muta...

Mitome is a specialized mitochondrial genome database designed for easy comparative analysis of various features of metazoan mitochondrial genomes such as base frequency, A+T skew, codon usage and gene arrangement pattern. A particular function of the database is the automatic reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships among metazoans selected by a user from a taxonomic tree menu based on nuc...

The complete mitochondrial genome of the three-spot seahorse was sequenced using a polymerase chain reaction-based method. The total length of mitochondrial DNA is 16,535 bp and includes 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a control region. The mitochondrial gene order of the three-spot seahorse also conforms to the distinctive vertebrate mitochondrial gen...

Patients with disorders from mutations in the mitochondrial genome have variable phenotypes, but common to many of these disorders are underlying changes in postmitotic cells, particularly neurons and muscle fibers. The mitochondrial dysfunction caused by these mutations has been shown to be associated with signs of apoptosis and to cause cell loss. Mutations of the mitochondrial genome have al...

Mitochondrial genomes in plants are larger and more complex than in other eukaryotes due to their recombinogenic nature as widely demonstrated. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is usually represented as a single circular map, the so-called master molecule. This molecule includes repeated sequences, some of which are able to recombine, generating sub-genomic molecules in various amounts, depending ...

Although Pst I does not cut the circular mitochondrial genome of the rat, BamHI generates from this genome two unequal fragments of DNA. Each of these fragments was cloned in pBR322. Nuclear DNA was digested from rat liver singly or doubly with Pst I and BamHI, and it was demonstrated that nuclear DNA shared a common sequence with the larger mitochondrial DNA BamHI fragment. The cloned larger m...

In order to study the evolution of mitochondrial genomes in the early branching lineages of the monocotyledons, i.e., the Acorales and Alismatales, we are sequencing complete genomes from a suite of key taxa. As a starting point the present paper describes the mitochondrial genome of Butomus umbellatus (Butomaceae) based on next-generation sequencing data. The genome was assembled into a circul...

We report here the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of four strains of bloom-forming raphidophytes from Heterosigma akashiwo These 39-kb sequences contain 42 protein-, two rRNA-, and 26 tRNA-coding sequences. Notable sequence variations were observed among these four newly sequenced and three previously characterized strains, suggesting their potential usage as strain-specific markers.
