The para -nitro substituted diphenyl ether herbicides which cause rapid plant pigment photobleaching can be divided into two categories: 1. those that have a photosynthetic requirement for activity (e.g. oxyfluorfen) and 2. those that have no apparent metabolic requirement for activity (e.g. acifluorfen). A m odel is presented for the latter category, in which the diphenyl ether herbicide inter...

Hypertension may be accompanied by decreased insulin sensitivity, lipid abnormalities and increased haemostatic risk, all of which, constitute risk factors for coronary artery disease. Modifications of lifestyle, including more physical exercise, are important, and may reduce the coronary risk profile. Physical activity has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce hypertriglyceridemia, improv...

Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in patients with metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to investigate whether a relationship exists between phagocytic NADPH oxidase activity and oxidative stress and atherosclerosis in metabolic syndrome patients. The study was performed in 56 metabolic syndrome patients (metabolic syndrome group), 99 patients with on...

The hands of 10 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were investigated with diphosphonate scanning and radiology. Increased uptake of isotope can be associated with some erosions but not all and also reflects other processes more linked to acute inflammatory areas unassociated with the development of erosions. If the latter are the hallmark of active rheumatoid arthritis then bone scans are not.

Many cells in mammals exist in the state of quiescence, which is characterized by reversible exit from the cell cycle. Quiescent cells are widely reported to exhibit reduced size, nucleotide synthesis, and metabolic activity. Much lower glycolytic rates have been reported in quiescent compared with proliferating lymphocytes. In contrast, we show here that primary human fibroblasts continue to e...

Biological aging is typically associated with a progressive increase in body fat mass and a loss of lean body mass. Owing to the metabolic consequences of reduced muscle mass, it is understood that normal aging and/or decreased physical activity may lead to a higher prevalence of metabolic disorders. Lifestyle modification, specifically changes in diet, physical activity, and exercise, is consi...

Reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle has been decreased over the last 5 decades despite significant gains in genetic selection, improved reproductive technologies and nutritional care. In high-yielding dairy cattle, the negative energy balance (NEB) during the first week post-partum adversely affects ovarian activity, mainly follicle growth and steroidogenesis. Circulating levels of non-este...

To investigate the cytotoxicity mechanism of quinocetone from the perspective of chemical structure, quinocetone and other new quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide derivatives were synthesized, and evaluated for their activities, and analysed for the metabolic characteristics. Quinocetone and other new quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide derivatives were synthesized, and evaluated for their activities, and analysed for...
