This book has three principle aims: to show that neither vision nor mental imagery involves the creation or inspection of picture-like mental representations; to defend the claim that our visual processes are, in significant part, cognitively impenetrable; and to develop a theory of “visual indexes”. In what follows, I assess Pylyshyn’s success in realising each of these aims in turn. I focus p...

Empirical findings indicate that humans draw inferences about spatial arrangements by constructing and manipulating mental models which are internal representations of objects and relations in spatial working memory. Central to the Mental Model Theory (MMT), is the assumption that the human reasoning process can be divided into three phases: (i) Mental model construction, (ii) model inspection,...

Formal models of cultural evolution analyze how cognitive and affective processes combine with patterns of social interaction to generate the distributions and dynamics of ‘representations’— ideas, beliefs, schemas, or mental models. Recently, cognitive anthropologists have made three criticisms of such models: First, mental representations are non-discrete. Second, cultural transmission is hig...

The present paper, which is intended for a diverse audience of evaluation researchers, applied social scientists and research funders, provides a broad overview of the conceptual and statistical issues involved in using multi-site randomized trials to learn about and from variation in program effects across individuals, across policy-relevant and theoretically-relevant subgroups of individuals ...

In order for robots to assist and interact with humans, they must be socially intelligent. Social intelligence is the ability to communicate and understand meaning through social interaction. Artificial intelligence can be broadly described, as an effort to describe and simulate the property of human intelligence inside of a computational model. In most cases, this simulation happens in a vacuu...

This study offers new views to the problems of the human mental by assuming that its primitives, atoms, molecules, and structures are formed by our memory representations of entities and the mental states caused by them. With the system models of human concepts and mind the eternal problems of human knowledge, values, motivation, language, action, and organisational culture are approached from ...

We study the double cosets of a Lie group by a compact Lie subgroup. We show that a Weil formula holds for double coset Lie hypergroups and show that certain representations of the Lie group lift to representations of the double coset Lie hypergroup. We characterize smooth (analytic) vectors of these lifted representations.

paper, Clark and Thornton showed how trading achieved representations against computational search could allow to easily solve problems that seemed intractable without some recoding of the incoming information. Perruchet and Vinter generalized this approach, and posited the formation of representations isomorphic to the world structure as the ultimate question that cognitive sciences have to ad...

noindent We have two goals in this paper. First, we investigate and construct cofree coalgebras over $n$-representations of quivers, limits and colimits of $n$-representations of quivers, and limits and colimits of coalgebras in the monoidal categories of $n$-representations of quivers. Second, for any given quivers $mathit{Q}_1$,$mathit{Q}_2$,..., $mathit{Q}_n$, we construct a new quiver $math...

The aims of this study were to: provide a precise characterisation of spatial category representations in Williams syndrome (WS); to determine the nature of the mechanistic contributions from spatial language performance and non-verbal cognition to spatial category representations in WS; and to explore the stability of spatial category representations in WS using error analysis. Spatial categor...
