BACKGROUND Skeletal muscle responds to eccentric contractions (ECC) with an anabolic response that involves the induction of protein synthesis through the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1. While we have reported that repeated ECC bouts after cachexia initiation attenuated muscle mass loss and inflammatory signalling, cachectic muscle's capacity to induce protein synthesis in response t...

Innervation territories of mechanically activated C nociceptor units in human skin. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 2641-2648, 1997. Innervation territories of single mechanically activated C nociceptors in the skin of the leg and foot were explored in normal human subjects. Microneurographic recordings were obtained in the peroneal nerve from 70 mechano-heat responsive (CMH) and 7 mechano-(but not heat) ...

In RbSn 2 Br 5 halide, prepared by mechano-chemistry, the 5s lone electron pairs of Sn 2+ were located from NPD and SXRD data. Among thermoelectric properties, a huge Seebeck coefficient an extremely low thermal conductivity are determined.

Significant new mechanical and electronic phenomena can arise in single-crystal semiconductors when their thickness reaches nanometer dimensions, where the two surfaces of the crystal are physically close enough to each other that what happens at one surface influences what happens at the other. We show experimentally that, in silicon nanomembranes, through-membrane elastic interactions cause t...

External forces play complex roles in cell organization, fate, and homeostasis. Changes in these forces, or how cells respond to them, can result in abnormal embryonic development and diseases in adults. How cells sense and respond to these mechanical stimuli requires an understanding of the biophysical principles that underlie changes in protein conformation and result in alterations in the or...

Mechanical forces will have been omnipresent since the origin of life, and living organisms have evolved mechanisms to sense, interpret, and respond to mechanical stimuli. The cardiovascular system in general, and the heart in particular, is exposed to constantly changing mechanical signals, including stretch, compression, bending, and shear. The heart adjusts its performance to the mechanical ...

Development of artificial scaffold for musculoskeletal applications, especially in load-bearing situations, requires the consideration of biomechanical aspects for its integrity and its function. However, the biomechanical loading could also be used to favour tissue formation through mechano-transduction phenomena. Design of scaffold could take advantages of this intrinsic mechanical loading.
