In the past decade, there has been a stream of work in designing approximation schemes for dense instances of NP-Hard problems. These include the work of Arora, Karger and Karpinski from 1995 and that of Frieze and Kannan from 1996. We address the problem of proving hardness results for (fully) dense problems, which has been neglected despite the fruitful effort put in upper bounds. In this wor...
Farming practices have changed dramatically over the years. The industrialization of farming has provided parasites with an abundance of hosts and is thought to have influenced parasite evolution. For example, the parasite that causes the highly contagious poultry disease, Marek's disease, has evolved over the past 60 years into a highly virulent pathogen. It is assumed that the industrializati...
Marek's disease virus is an evolving pathogen, acquiring virulence in response to increasingly effective vaccines. Although vaccine efficacy is generally good, industry has placed a high priority on more effective products. The search for better vaccines has been conducted mainly in the arena of molecular biology, and has been thus far disappointing. Various conditions prevail that currently li...
Currently, there is no standard treatment for neurolymphomatosis because of the scarcity of clinical studies. Here, we report the successful treatment of neurolymphomatosis caused by follicular lymphoma with bendamustine, which could be an effective treatment option for this condition.
This study reports the complete genome sequence of fowl aviadenovirus A strain JM1/1, which caused gizzard erosions in broilers occurring in Japan. The JM1/1 genome is 43,809 bp in length and most closely related to the strain chicken embryo lethal orphan (CELO); moreover, multiple site insertions and deletions were found.
A recent draft manuscript suggested that Facebook use might be related to lower academic achievement in college and graduate school (Karpinski, 2009). The report quickly became a media sensation and was picked up by hundreds of news outlets in a matter of days. However, the results were based on correlational data in a draft manuscript that had not been published, or even considered for publica...
