We analyze the spectrum of a certain singular integral operator on the space (L2(fi))3 where fi is contained in three dimensional Euclidean space and has a Lipschitz continuous boundary. This operator arises in the integral formulation of the magnetostatic field problem. We decompose (L2(fi))3 into invariant subspaces: in one where the operator is the zero map; in one, the identity map; and in ...

A balancing domain decomposition (BDD) method is considered as a preconditioner of the iterative domain decomposition method (DDM) for magnetostatic problems. The BDD method enables us to keep convergence properties of the iterative DDM even if the number of subdomains increases. However, in case of magnetostatic problems, the dimension of the coarse problem required in the BDD procedure depend...

Magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic tracks can be used to trap and transport superparamagnetic beads for lab-on-a-chip applications. Here it is shown that the magnetostatic binding between a domain wall and a superparamagnetic bead suspended in a host fluid leads to a distinct magneto-mechanical resonance under application of a sinusoidal driving field. The characteristic resonant frequency ...

Approximate surface fields due to a plane-wave solution and a local-mode solution are compared. The plane-wave solution, which is new, is shown to agree well with experiment. The local-mode solution, which often has been applied to tapered waveguides and antennas, fails near the cutoffs of the surface waves.

Consider a uniform train of surface waves with a two-dimensional, bi-periodic surface pattern, propagating on deep water. One approximate model of the evolution of these waves is a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which neglects any dissipation of the waves. We show that in this model, such a wave train is linearly unstable to small perturbations in the initial data, because of ...

A subproblem method with dual finite element magnetostatic and magnetodynamic formulations is developed to correct the inaccuracies near edges and corners coming from thin shell models, that replace thin volume regions by surfaces. The surface-to-volume correction problem is defined as one of the multiple subproblems applied to a complete problem, considering successive additions of inductors a...

We have studied the behavior of interlayer coupling in giant magnetoresistance spin valves as a function of seed layer composition and spacer layer thickness. Using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy, we have measured directly the roughness of the top surface of the lower ferromagnetic layer. We find that the seed layer composition is correlated to the roughnesses of the interfaces inside th...

For the analysis of single radiofrequency (RF) surface coils at frequencies commonly used for magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, magnetostatic analysis often provides sufficiently accurate results. However, the availability of higher field whole body magnets and the widespread use of RF coil arrays have demonstrated the need for more accurate solutions. While more advanced approaches ...
