Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging previously has been used to examine structure and pathologies of the eye. The present study investigates the use of a saturation-transfer technique, which exploits water-macromolecular proton magnetic interactions, to enhance image contrast in the rabbit eye in vivo. Upon steady-state saturation of the macromolecular-proton magnetization, the wate...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Manually drawn VOI-based analysis shows a decrease in magnetization transfer ratio in the hippocampus of patients with Alzheimer disease. We investigated with whole-brain voxelwise analysis the regional changes of the magnetization transfer ratio in patients with mild Alzheimer disease and patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty pa...

In the progression of ischemia, pH is important and is essential in elucidating the association between metabolic disruption, lactate formation, acidosis and tissue damage. Chemical exchange‑dependent saturation transfer (CEST) imaging can be used to detect tissue pH and, in particular, a specific form of CEST magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), termed amide proton transfer (APT) MRI, which is se...

Magnetic resonance based on molecular imaging allows tracing contrast agents thereby facilitating early diagnosis of diseases in a non-invasive fashion that enhances the soft tissue with high spatial resolution. Recently, the exchange of protons between the contrast agent and water, known as the chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) effect, has been measured by applying a suitable pulse ...

Recent technical advances have enabled the visualization of neuromelanin in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and locus ceruleus (LC) by 3-tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging in vivo. In the present study, we successfully detected neuromelanin in the SNc and LC of 6 healthy volunteers at 1.5T using a 3D gradient echo sequence with off-resonance magnetization transfer contrast.

A new MRI method with a contrast that is derived from the macromolecular composition and spin dynamics in the tissue is described and demonstrated on excised mouse brain and rat spinal cord. In the method, magnetization is selectively excited in the macromolecules by using a double quantum filter and subsequently transferred to water. The new imaging method differs from previous methods that re...
