OBJECTIVE Factors and mechanisms that activate macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques are incompletely understood. We examined the capacity of heparanase to activate macrophages. METHODS AND RESULTS Highly purified heparanase was added to mouse peritoneal macrophages and macrophage-like J774 cells, and the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, matrix metalloproteinase-9, interlukin-1, and monocy...

Senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 strain (SAMP8) and PrP-hAβPPswe/PS1ΔE9 (APP/PS1) mice are classic animal models of sporadic Alzheimer's disease and familial AD respectively. Our study showed that object recognition memory, spatial learning and memory, active and passive avoidance were deteriorated and neuroendocrine immunomodulation (NIM) network was imbalance in SAMP8 and APP/PS1 mice. SA...

The present study investigated the effect of parenteral glutamine (Gln) supplementation on cellular adhesion molecule expression and release of chemokines responsible for inflammatory cell recruitment in rats undergoing a total gastrectomy. Normal rats with internal jugular catheters were assigned to one control group and two experimental groups and received total parenteral nutrition (TPN). A ...

The CC chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5; regulated on activation, normal T expressed and secreted) is known to recruit and activate leukocytes; however, its role in altering the responses of host cells to a subsequent encounter with a microbial pathogen has rarely been studied. Recombinant guinea pig (rgp)CCL5 was prepared, and its influence on peritoneal and alveolar macrophage activation was examined...

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a facultative intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of melioidosis, a spectrum of potentially fatal diseases endemic in Northern Australia and South-East Asia. We demonstrate that B. pseudomallei rapidly modifies infected macrophage-like cells in a manner analagous to osteoclastogenesis. These alterations include multinucleation and the expression by infect...

We establish a characterization of the class of the simplest nearest neighbor spin systems possessing the mean coverage function (mcf) that obeys a second order differential equation, and derive explicit expressions for the mcf’s of the above models. Based on these expressions, the problem of ergodicity of the models is studied and bounds for their spectral gaps are obtained.

Multi-core fibers (MCFs) with coupled-cores are attractive large-mode area (LMA) specialty fiber designs that support the propagation of a few transverse modes often called supermodes (SMs). Compared to other LMA fibers, the uniqueness of MCF arises from the higher degrees of design space offered by a multitude of core-array geometries, resulting in extended flexibility to tailor SM properties....

The subset of human blood monocytes expressing low levels of CD14 and high levels of CD16 (CD14+CD16+) exhibits features resembling mature tissue macrophages and can be expanded in inflammatory conditions. We analyzed expression of CC chemokine receptors (CCR) in CD14+CD16+ versus CD14++ monocytes, which may be crucial for specific trafficking. Multicolor flow cytometric analysis of whole perip...

White adipose tissue (WAT) is a major endocrine and secretory organ, which releases a wide range of protein signals and factors termed adipokines. A number of adipokines, including leptin, adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor alpha, IL-1beta (interleukin 1beta), IL-6, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, nerve growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, ...

Infections with the helminth parasite Brugia malayi share many key features with Th2-mediated allergic diseases, including recruitment of eosinophils. We have investigated the dynamics of inflammatory cell recruitment under type 2 cytokine conditions in mice infected with B. malayi. Among the cells recruited to the site of infection is a novel population of "alternatively activated" macrophages...
