Modern day fast bowling places immense strain on the spine. Stress fractures of the lumbar region are common. If a period of conservative treatment fails to return a fast bowler to professional sport, surgery is considered. Good results have been reported using a direct screw repair of the spondylolytic defect. A case is presented of a failed surgical intervention with an alternative technique.

Study Design Prospective study. Objective Surgeons' recommendations for a safe return to driving following cervical and lumbar surgery vary and are based on empirical data. Driver reaction time (DRT) is an objective measure of the ability to drive safely. There are limited data about the effect of cervical and lumbar surgery on DRT. The purpose of our study was to use the DRT to determine when ...

However, no literature available focused on the issue. MATERIAL AND METHODS A normal healthy finite element model of L3-5 and four anterior lumbar inte...

A significant fall occurred in the protein content of successive specimens of lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (C.S.F.) withdrawn during the course of air encephalography in 57% of cases. No correlation was found between the fall in the protein concentration and the total volume of air injected or the total volume of C.S.F. withdrawn, but the size of the fall was greater when the initial lumbar C.S.F...

TIIE doctrine of the reflex constitution of the nervous system-the foundation of Hughlings Jackson's neurological teaching (II, 63, 399)*-has received ample recognition in the study of the more primitive activities of the organism, such as locomotion, but has, by contrast, received practically no recognitioni in the study of that most complex activity, mentation. Failure to regard the highest c...

Lumbar disc herniation is one of the most common medical and surgical problems all over the world. The vast majority of lumbosacral radiculopathies are caused by paracentral herniation. However, Hood reported that far lateral lumbar disc herniation (FLLDH) accounts for 2.8 – 10% of all disc herniations. Over 75% of FLLDHs occur at the L3 –L4 and L4 – L5 levels. In addition, FLLDH presents a cli...

We have compared the antinociceptive effect of extradural lignocaine on somatic and visceral nociception in pregnant (n = 11) and non-pregnant rats (n = 9). Colorectal distension (CD) threshold and tail flick (TF) latency were measured as visceral and somatic nociception, respectively, for 60 min after extradural injection. On days 19, 20 and 21 of pregnancy, rats received lignocaine 200, 400 o...
