Osteochondroma represents the largest group of benign tumors of bone, which usually develops in long bones and relatively uncommon in the craniofacial region. The condyle and coronoid tip are the most common sites of occurrence in the mandible, but both sides of condyle involved has never been reported. Here, we describe a case of osteochondroma arising from the bilateral mandibular condyle.
The effects of scale on the estimated stresses and safety factors in the humeri of several bird and bat species were investigated. This was accomplished by estimating the lift distribution across the wings at two extremes of flight, gliding flight and the downstroke in hovering, finding the center of lift on the wings at these two extremes and calculating the applied bending and twisting moment...
Desmoplastic fibroma is a benign but locally aggressive tumor arising usually from the mandible, pelvis and long bones with a potential for recurrence. We report a case of desmoplastic fibroma of the frontal bone in a young male.
Intra-osseous phlebography and the measurement of intramedullary pressure (IMP) have been used clinically and in experimental animals as qualitative methods of measuring blood flow in the bone. The normal phlebographic appearances in long bones are not clearly understood and the correlation between these appearances and the IMP is not known. The distal femora of 10 anaesthetised rabbits were ca...
Bisphosphonates are employed with increasing frequency in various pediatric disorders, mainly associated with osteoporosis. After cessation of bisphosphonate treatment in children, skeletal radiologic changes have been documented including dense metaphyseal lines of the long bones and "bone in bone" appearance of the vertebrae. However, the evolution of these radiographic changes has not been f...
BACKGROUND/AIM The basic task of a forensic examiner during the exhumation of mass graves or in mass accidents is to establish identity of a person. The results obtained through these procedures depend on the level of perceptibility of post mortal changes and they are compared with premortal data obtained from family members of those missing or killed. Experience with exhumations has shown sign...
Epiphysial chondroblastoma is the name proposed by one of us (1947) for the relatively rare tumour designated by Jaffe and Lichtenstein in 1942 as “benign chondroblastoma of bone” and formerly identified as a “giant-cell tumour” variant (Kolodny 1927, Ewing 1928, Codman 1931). Johnson (1963) actually still classifies this lesion as “enchondromatous giant-cell tumour”. Notwithstanding that its p...
The cross-sectional area of a nutrient foramen of a long bone is related to blood flow requirements of the internal bone cells that are essential for dynamic bone remodelling. Foramen area increases with body size in parallel among living mammals and non-varanid reptiles, but is significantly larger in mammals. An index of blood flow rate through the foramina is about 10 times higher in mammals...
Observation of sexual chromatin has shown to be very helpful in gender forensic diagnosis. In the present study we analyzed the diagnosis performance of the method in, non-treated or treated with conventional bone techniques, exhumed bone pieces. We used long bones of male and female individuals, the method applied is described in Suazo et al. (2010). In the non-treated exhumed pieces, the gene...
The distribution of elements in sauropod humeri and femora was determined by micro-X-rayfluorescence analysis (μ-XRF). Element distribution maps enable correlations between bone architecture and spatial distribution of the chemical elements. The investigations reveal no significant macroscopic gradients in the element distribution across the fossil bone cross-section. More detailed investigatio...
