The first detected case of genotype 4 of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Salvador, Bahia, is described. RT-PCR tests were used to detect HCV-RNA, and LIPA was used for genotyping. Genotype 4 responds poorly to treatment, and it is therefore important to actively search for people who have been in contact with it.

We report a rare mesenteric localized Mycobacterium genavense infection in a severely immunocompromised human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient. An INNO-LiPA MYCOBACTERIA v2 test was performed directly on biopsy samples. This new molecular tool could be used for simultaneous identification of mycobacterium species from human specimens, but other studies are needed to validate our first re...

A new DNA probe assay (INNO LiPA Mycobacteria; Innogenetics, Ghent, Belgium) for the simultaneous identification, by means of reverse hybridization and line-probe technology, of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, Mycobacterium kansasii, Mycobacterium xenopi, Mycobacterium gordonae, the species of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), Mycobacterium scrofulaceum, and Mycobacterium chelonae was ...

BACKGROUND The non-structural 5A (NS5A) protein of HCV is a multifunctional phosphoprotein involved in regulation of viral replication and virion assembly. NS5A inhibitors targeting domain I of NS5A protein have demonstrated high potency and pan-genotypic antiviral activity, however they possess a low genetic barrier to resistance. At present, only genotype 1, the most prevalent HCV genotype ha...

BACKGROUND Resistance testing is increasingly accepted as a tool in guiding the selection of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) antiretroviral therapy in HIV-1 infected individuals who fail their current regimen. OBJECTIVES To descriptively compare the correlation between virologic treatment response and results using three genotypic HIV-1 drug resistance interpretation systems: the ...

Small colony variants (SCVs) can be defined as a naturally occurring sub-population of bacteria characterized by their reduced colony size and distinct biochemical properties. SCVs of Staphylococcus aureus have been studied extensively over the past two decades due to their role in recurrent human infections. However, little work has been done on SCVs of Escherichia coli, and this work has focu...
