Spontaneous perforation of the uterus is rare and only several cases have been reported in the English medical literature. Most of the patients had gynecological malignancy and almost all were associated with cervical occlusion. We report a case of diffuse peritonitis resulting from spontaneously perforated pyometra with an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted for more than two decades. This case...

The aims of the present study were to investigate the ability of hearing-impaired (HI) individuals with different binaural hearing conditions to discriminate spatial auditory-sources at the midline and lateral positions, and to explore the possible central processing mechanisms by measuring the minimal audible angle (MAA) and mismatch negativity (MMN) response. To measure MAA at the left/right ...

An expansile temporal bone lesion above the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a 55-year-old woman was initially diagnosed as pigmented villonodular tenosynovitis. Preoperative embolization of the tumor had resulted in excessive tumoral hemorrhagic pigment. The surgical and CT findings suggested that the TMJ was not involved, and a final diagnosis of giant cell tumor was made.

PURPOSE To report a case of peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy (PEHCR) in an elderly patient. CASE REPORT A 74-year-old Caucasian woman, with a 20-year history of a stable choroidal nevus in her right eye, was referred for evaluation of two small hemorrhagic pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) affecting the temporal peripheral fundus of the same eye. Nine months later, the l...

BACKGROUND Escherichia and Salmonella encode SdiA, a transcription factor of the LuxR family that regulates genes in response to N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) produced by other species of bacteria. E. coli genes that change expression in the presence of plasmid-encoded sdiA have been identified by several labs. However, many of these genes were identified by overexpressing sdiA on a plasmid...

The N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated quorum-sensing system in the phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae requires the AHL synthase AhlI and the regulator AhlR, and is additionally subject to regulation by AefR. The contribution of quorum sensing to the expression of a variety of traits expected to be involved in epiphytic fitness and virulence of P syringae were examined. Both ...

Lumbar synovial cysts are an uncommon cause of back pain and radiculopathy, usually manifesting with gradual onset of symptoms, secondary to involvement of the spinal canal. Rarely, intracyst hemorrhage occurs, and may acutely present as radicular - or even spinal cord - compression syndrome. Synovial cysts are generally associated with degenerative facets, although the pathogenesis has not bee...

Bacterial populations coexisting in the phyllosphere niche have important effects on plant health. Quorum sensing (QS) allows bacteria to communicate via diffusible signal molecules, but QS-dependent behaviors in phyllosphere bacterial populations are poorly understood. We investigate the dense and diverse N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-producing phyllosphere bacteria living on tobacco leaf su...

BACKGROUND Asymptomatic and oligosymptomatic appendicitis are rare and challenging diagnoses that should not be missed. CASE PRESENTATION A young female patient presented with mild to moderate pain in the middle and lower abdomen, and the results of physical examination, including digital rectal examination, were otherwise non-contributory. Ultrasonography demonstrated a marked increase of th...

We report a case of a 64-year-old woman with anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas (ACP) with cyst formation and review 60 ACP cases reported in Japan. In 20% of cases, laboratory tests revealed severe anemia (hemoglobin level < 10.0 g/dL) and elevated leucocyte counts (> 12000/mm3), which were likely attributable to rapid tumor growth, intratumoral hemorrhage, and necrosis. Elevated serum CA19-...
