Samples (blood or tissue fluid) from 405 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Finnmark, Northern Norway, were assayed for antibodies against T. gondii using the direct agglutination test (DAT). The proportion of seropositive animals was 42.5 %, with no significant relationship between sex and infection. The proportion of seropositives seemed to increase with age, in agreement with findings in previou...

Sera from 523 wild rodents were tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using either an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) (rats and mice, with titer >or=80 considered positive) or a latex agglutination test (LAT) (voles, squirrels, and pocket mice, with titer >or=32 considered positive). Seventeen percent (88/523) of the rodents, including 26% (85/328) of the Peromyscus sp. and 8% (3/37...

A large-scale study on canine Leishmania infection (CanL) was conducted in six localities along a west-east transect in the Algerian littoral zone (Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Tipaza, Boumerdes, Bejaia, Jijel) and covering two sampling periods. In total 2,184 dogs were tested with an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and a direct agglutination test (DAT). Combined multiple-testing and several ...

The study compared the serological evidence of leptospirosis in 212 students in four schools (veterinary, dental, advanced nursing education and pharmacy) of the University of the West Indies (UWI), by testing for IgG immunoglobulins to Leptospira spp. using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Overall, of 212 students tested by the ELISA, ...

A new slide latex agglutination test was compared with microscopy and culture for diagnosing vaginal candidosis in 367 women attending a genitourinary medicine clinic. Vaginal candidosis occurred in 10% of the patients, and 7% had commensal carriage of Candida spp. The slide latex agglutination test was superior to microscopy in immediate diagnosis and was rapid and simple to perform. Of the pa...

Background: Brucellosis is an important but ignored zoonotic disease in India, with high prevalence among livestock and humans. It is of particular concern among veterinarians as they come in contact with infected animals in their day to day work. Aim and Objectives: The present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of antibrucellar antibodies and assess the Knowledge, Attitude and ...

For culture-negative meningitis, use of the latex agglutination test for detection of bacterial antigen in the CSF has a sensitivity of only 7%. Routine use of the latex agglutination test may not contribute to the management of suspected acute bacterial meningitis, since patients are treated on the basis of their clinical presentations and CSF findings.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi has been associated with natural cases of abortion and stillbirth in horses. However, little is known about the prevalence of this parasite in horses. We examined sera from 559 horses from Brazil for antibodies to E. cuniculi using the indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test and the direct agglutination test (DAT). We found that 79 (14.1%) were positive in the IF...

The reported incidence of leptospirosis increased 30-fold in Thailand between 1995 and 2000. Despite many hypotheses to explain the increase, the true etiology remains unknown. We conducted a review of the national surveillance system for leptospirosis, examining the reporting practices, system attributes, and utilization of laboratory confirmation in two northeastern provinces. Using standard ...

Nonspecific inhibitors of rubella hemagglutination can be removed by treatment of sera with heparin-manganous chloride for use in the hemagglutination-inhibition test. After removal of nonspecific inhibitors by this procedure, an excess of manganous chloride may remain. This may cause the cells to agglutinate, thus obscuring the reading at low serum dilutions. This disadvantage can be overcome ...
