We report a study of the axialisation and laser cooling of single ions and small clouds of ions in a Penning trap. A weak radiofrequency signal applied to a segmented ring electrode couples the magnetron motion to the cyclotron motion, which results in improved laser cooling of the magnetron motion. This allows us to approach the trapping conditions of a Paul trap, but without any micromotion. ...

In-trap preparation of highly charged ions (HCIs) for precision mass measurements by cooling in a strongly coupled plasma of laser-cooled 24Mg+ ions is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. For HCIs electrostatically decelerated below 1 eV the simulation suggests stopping times of a few 10 s for high charge states (QHCI = 40, AHCI = 100). The deposited energy is found to be distribute...

Laser cooling of heavy-ion beams in a storage ring is systematically studied with a multiparticle simulation code where not only exact lattice characteristics and space-charge forces but also realistic laser-ion interactions can be incorporated. The resonant coupling method is applied in order to extend the powerful longitudinal photon pressure to the transverse degrees of freedom. It is shown ...

We propose a mechanism for the collective cooling of a large number N of trapped particles to very low temperatures by applying red-detuned laser fields and coupling them to the quantized field inside an optical resonator. The dynamics is described by what appears to be rate equations, but where some of the major quantities are coherences and not populations. The cooperative behavior of the sys...

The grating magneto-optical trap (GMOT) requires only one beam and three planar diffraction gratings to form a cloud of cold atoms above the plane of the diffractors. Despite the complicated polarization arrangement, we demonstrate sub-Doppler cooling of 87Rb atoms to a temperature of 7.6 0.6 μK through amultistage, far-detunedGMOT in conjunction with optical molasses. A decomposition of the el...

The study of low density, ultracold atomic Fermi gases is a promising avenue to understand fermion superfluidity from first principles. One technique currently used to bring Fermi gases in the degenerate regime is sympathetic cooling through a reservoir made of an ultracold Bose gas. We discuss a proposal for trapping and cooling of two-species Fermi-Bose mixtures into optical dipole traps made...

We perform magnetically assisted Sisyphus laser cooling of the triatomic free radical strontium monohydroxide (SrOH). This is achieved with principal optical cycling in the rotationally closed P(N^{''}=1) branch of either the X[over ˜]^{2}Σ^{+}(000)↔A[over ˜]^{2}Π_{1/2}(000) or the X[over ˜]^{2}Σ^{+}(000)↔B[over ˜]^{2}Σ^{+}(000) vibronic transitions. Molecules lost into the excited vibrational ...

A laser cooling method for trapped atoms is described which achieves ground state cooling by exploiting quantum interference in a driven Lambda-shaped arrangement of atomic levels. The scheme is technically simpler than existing methods of sideband cooling, yet it can be significantly more efficient, in particular when several motional modes are involved, and it does not impose restrictions on ...

Laser irradiation with a 9.6 m wavelength resonant with the 0200 level improves the anti-Stokes cooling of CO2 gas. Excitation of the 0200 level increases cooling by producing a larger population of 0001 , despite the higher-energy photon absorption, compared to a 1000 level excitation. Further selection of macroconditions temperature, pressure, Xe diluent atomic fraction, and geometric paramet...

Since the first demonstration of net cooling twenty years ago, optical refrigeration of solids has progressed to outperform all other solid-state cooling processes. It has become the first and only solid-state refrigerator capable of reaching cryogenic temperatures, and now the first solid-state cooling below 100 K. Such substantial progress required a multi-disciplinary approach of pump laser ...
